The Cumbria/Lake District

The Lake District conjures up images of magnificent mountains and shimmering lakes and that is exactly what visitors find here. In fact the whole county of Cumbria is home to some of Britain's most beautiful scenery. This region has been a favourite all year round holiday destination for years and apart from its natural beauty it's also packed with lots of attractions and activities that cater for every kind of holidaymaker, from family holidays to romantic breaks for couples and from those who are looking for lots of activities and sports to those that prefer more gentle country pursuits. The Lake District National Park lies at the heart of Cumbria and contains well known and much loved holiday destinations such as Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside, Coniston and Grasmere, here there are lots of charming Lakeland villages to discover and visitor attractions for all the family. The northern and western lakes have miles of untouched natural rugged beauty and rural villages as well as being home to the historic northern lakes town of Keswick with its many shops, pubs and restaurants; providing a great holiday base. Other areas to discover include the Eden Valley, Cartmel peninsula, south east Cumbria and the Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall area; all equally beautiful and very handy for day trips into the lakes.

Boasting outstanding views and made up of mainly 18th century stone cottages the small village of Hesket Newmarket makes a perfect base for those wishing to discover the more remote and lesser known parts of the Lake District National Park. Fell walks, mountain biking and cycling can all be enjoyed straight from the door of Oakview with hikes up High Pike and Carrock Fell proving popular. The village has a small shop and a pub which brews its own ales. This area is rich with walking and cycling routes. The Cumbria Way, the C2C and the Reivers Route are all accessible from the village of Caldbeck, half a mile away. The popular town of Keswick is nearby where you can find out more about the area in the Tourist information centre before setting off and exploring this stunning part of the Lake District.
