The Costa del Sol region
Calahonda is a favourite holiday destination as it is ideally situated right by the sea between Fuengirola and Marbella (both about 10 minutes drive away), and only 25 minutes drive from Malaga Airport.
There's an an excellent bus service along the coast, with buses running every 25 minutes to Fuengirola and Marbella, stopping off at lots of beaches, villages, and attractions on the way.
If you wish to travel further afield in the Malaga (Easterly) direction, a train will whisk you along the coast from Fuengirola via such tourist hotspots as Benalmadena and Torremolinos.
There are many attractions in a westerly direction emminently worthy of serious exploration, including:-
Elegant Marbella -where every day is a fashion show;
Puerto Banus -up-market marina surrounded by restaurants of every nationality, theme bars and designer shops;
The lovely unspoilt town of Estepona -glorious beach & characterful tree-lined promenade;
Selwo Adventure Park -where else can you observe hundreds of wild birds of all sizes & species, and from many different countries, as you walk through a stunning semi-tropical valley .........with a net over the top !;
And Gibraltar -where you can enjoy magnificent cliff-side & ocean views from a cable car, meet the Barbary Apes, explore miles of rock-tunnels, and save serious money on drinks & cigarettes.
The attractions of the Costa del Sol are not only lined up along the coast.
You need only to drive into the mountains inland to discover what some refer to as the "real Spain", those characterful "white" villages hidden away within folds of rock. The nearest, and I think the prettiest, is Mijas, just 15 minutes drive from Dona Lola. The views from the very reasonably-priced restaurants there are nothing less than breathtaking. It just NEEDS to be visited !
And if you decide not to hire a car, but want to see more of the Costa del Sol, no problem. Just book a space on a coach at the Dona Lola reception. There are many organised trips to such spectacular places as Ronda, Nerja, and Seville, and to the less-spectacular, but interesting nevertheless, Tangiers !
You can often partake in a FREE reception trip to Malaga or Mijas, or to the market at Fuengirola.
The Calahonda / Dona Lola Gold Crown Beach Resort area
The Dona Lola resort offers an extremely extensive range of leisure facilities. The outdoor pool begins at a shallow end safe for youngsters, and then just meanders right alongside the sea for 270 feet and under 2 lovely white bridges before reaching the deep end.
Dozens of loungers and umbrellas surround the pool, and it's a lovely place to relax, with the hypnotic sound of the waves lapping up the beach and against the rocky outcrops providing snooze-inducing background music.
There's an area around the pool for the youngsters to gather, with pool-tables.
Our sheltered over 18's swimming pool offers a quieter facility at peak-times. It is heated by solar panels. The water temperature on my last visit in late November was 34 degrees.....very pleasent ! There are many more loungers & umbrellas here, and you're within easy reach of the bar / bistro in a lovely sun-trap amongst waterfalls & ponds.
Dona Lola is most certainly not short of bars and restaurants. There is the aforementioned bistro bar in the leisure centre, and the local beach bars, and within a couple of minutes walk from the apartment there are several more good-value bars & restaurants - including English, Hong Kong, Indian, Spanish and Mexican.
There are dozens more restaurants and bars just across the main road, via convenient foot-bridge or underpass.
Within a short driving distance there are theme restaurants at Cabopino, and more upmarket restaurants towards Marbella.
There is a very useful mini-market on the complex offering very reasonable prices on a large variety of produce, and a larger ones just across the main road.
There are tennis courts on the complex, and there are snooker tables, pool tables, and table-tennis tables in the indoor leisure centre. There are good places in the sea close by for snorkelling. On beaches within easy reach of the resort you can partake of water-skiing, jet-biking, sailing, and wind-surfing.
Dona Lola is very much a family resort, and as such children and teenagers are very well catered for. We have a children's club with a really nice Spanish events organiser called Curro. He keeps them well occupied with fun, frolicks, and sporty activities, such as 5-a-side football matches (both in & out of the water!) tennis, table-tennis & pool competitions, and beach-combing.
Our more mature guests are not forgotten. A great variety of free activities are arranged for you too ! These include less-energetic French Boules matches, just-as-energetic aqua-aerobics, paella-making demonstrations, wine-tasting sessions, and beach-walks etc. There are free Spanish lessons, and free evening entertainment throughout the year. Curro was a botanist in an earlier life, and will teach you much about the local flora and fauna on his nature walks.
From Dona Lola you can walk along the beach for as long as you want in both directions.
Walking right for thirty minutes will bring you to the attractive harbour village of Cabopino, with it's cheerful beach-bar, a few up-market restaurants, and a beautiful sandy beach.
Walking left will take you to La Cala, a more typically Spanish sea-side fishing village, with another nice beach, and lots of bars and good-value restaurants. You'll pass beach-bars (or not, as the case may be !) within ten minutes in either direction. To return, you could jump on a bus if you don't fancy the walk back, or jump in a taxi.
There's another nice walk DOWN from the hills above Calahonda, following river-beds & manicured golf-courses, to the beach between Cabopino and Dona Lola. How do you get up in the first place ? -well, by road-train !
In short, there's everything on Dona Lola that you could possibly want from a Spanish holiday at whatever time of the year. And at risk of boring you with this fact, you really will not miss a hire-car !

Guestbook for Dona Lola
"We would highly recommend staying at this charming apartment which was exactly as described in the listing. Location was excellent, only a straightforward 25 minute car journey from Malaga airport and the complex was situated right on the sea front. The furthest we travelled was to Seville approx 2hours drive away but was well worth it and Ronda was 1hour. The living room and master bedroom had stunning sea views, also great for watching the sun come up. The complex was well looked after and the leisure facilities looked great although we just didn't get time to use them. There was also a convenient shop and a few bars/restaurants on site with more situated across the road -all within easy walking distance including Italian, Chinese, Indian, Spanish and English. The apartment itself was clean, well maintained and had a lovely sea themed decor. It didn't seem like a holiday flat but felt homely. We made good use of the washing machine, dishwasher, cooker, toaster and microwave with no problems. 6 of us were sharing with no hot water shortages neither morning nor night. Brian, the owner was very helpful and informative, providing generous information before and after making the booking and on arrival."
"Having read the descriptions etc we arrived at Dona Lola with high expectations and we were not disappointed! The complex and apartment were everything you need for a good relaxing holiday in the sunshine. The apartment was very clean and well equipped- a home from home with great views from the balcony of the sea and the complex. Brian provided great customer service from our first enquiry to after we arrived back home - thank you. We would certainly recommend this property a friends. "
"We had a wonderful holiday at Brian´s apartment. The apartment is very practical, kitchen is overwhelmingly equipped, living room vividly decorated and the balcony view over the Mediterranean was breath taking.
I must say that Brian is a very reliable apt owner who certainly beats any travellers agency in making arrangements and making the guests feel comfortable.
We cooked our food in the apartment throughout the week since we have such big family and Brian´s kitchen had absolutely everything. We ate out a couple of times (the restaurant food was wonderful).
We did not have a car and the maintenance company fetched us from the airport (with the apt keys). we took the bus to Fuengirola and Marbella, which was very easy and quite inexpensive. E.g. bus tickets for the six of us to Fuengirola (4,60€) and Marbella (7,20€) and the taxi for appr 10min costs 6€.
We kept the buggy downstairs and it worked fine for us. The apartment baby cot, high chair and DVD player came in handy and all of our children loved the living room nautical theme. Our children absolutely loved walking on the beach collecting sea shells. Us parents really enjoyed the view.
I would definitely recommend Martha 2/4/2 for a family similar to ours.
Thank you Brian for everything! "
'I just wanted to drop you a short note to tell you how much we enjoyed our stay at Dona Lola. The apartment was charming, and the resort was wonderful. It was a dream vacation for us, and we had a wonderful time. Spain is magical and we all loved it. We didn't do a whole lot of touring, just walked on the beach and rested.'
'We had a wonderful holiday and found the apartment and complex to be excellent. Martha 2/4/2 is a perfect location on the complex as it does not suffer from any noise from the pool area and is so convenient for the other facilities.'
'We had a great holiday did a great deal of sightseeing as the resort location was good for day trips thoroughly enjoyed the balcony with it's breathtaking views -loved the one from the master bathroom window it was great to have the air-con.'
