The Balearic Islands region
Villas in Menorca are a great way to enjoy what many people consider to be the jewel of the Balearics. Menorca has more beaches than all the other Balearic islands put together, and most of the 200km coastline is made up of beautiful, clean sandy coves separated by rocky headlands. Much of the island's interior is lush and green with pine covered hills so whether your villa rental Menorca villa is on the coast or inland you can be sure of wonderful environment in which to enjoy your holiday.
A Solmar Villas Menorca holiday does not just have to be about lazing on the beach as there is a wealth of interesting places to discover. Mahon, the island capital, is a charming town with its local character and Georgian architecture and it has one of the biggest natural harbours in the world. Ciutadella, at the opposite end of the island, is equally as interesting and offers a complete contrast with its Moorish influenced architecture. During the past the island was inhabited by many civilizations and their legacy is over 500 fascinating prehistoric sites to be visited.

The resort has a wealth of bars and restaurants including some on the beach. A weekly market is held in the square to compliment the choice from the varied shops within the resort.
A little road train runs around the resort through the day, and down to the beach. Besides the Covas den Xoroi nightclub, family entertainment can be found most evenings in local hotel, which are open to all.

"Views that have the WOW factor - Accommodation that certainly doesn't."
This was our fourth trip to Menorca and we still love it.
I am an avid Trip Advisor user and was a little concerned that there weren't any reviews for our villa - I was right.
Our flight times meant that we arrived at Villa Vista Mar early and so were very grateful that we were allowed to drop off our luggage then go and have lunch and 'food shop'. (The free delivery service that both shops offered was brilliant - we even had lifts back with The Village delivery man!)
One of the reasons we chose this Villa was because it said that having a car wasn't necessary and that shops restaurants and the beach were close by.
This was especially important as one of our party has a defibrillator fitted due to a heart condition so 500m sounded manageable. Imagine our horror when we discovered the way into the shops and centre almost required mountaineering equipment because the roads and paths were that steep - also it was over 1km in distance and MUCH further to the beach - this meant that journeys had to be carefully planned and sometimes taxis ordered.
The villa is described as luxurious - this is not true and we felt that the owners must think that the truly stunning views will take your mind away from how tired and worn it is.
We had to have the very pleasant maintenance man (Later discovered he was the owner and spoke very little English) in on several occasions as the boilers were not working so we had no hot water. My son had to temporarily repair the leaking sink in his en-suite on two occasions.
The bathrooms were minuscule and very tatty - badly in need of re-grouting and resealing. The showers were pathetic dribbles - and heaven help you if you dropped your soap in the shower cubicle - trying to bend down with the doors shut was nigh physically impossible !! The towels were the most basic, thin rough and barely large enough to wrap around.
I know that this all sounds very negative but when something is advertised as luxurious and it clearly is not then other people should know.
Ants are often a problem in Menorca and we have learnt to be careful from past experience - but here was a whole new level - we even had them IN the fridge. My husband awoke up in the middle of the night to discover his pillow and head was ant-central - it was most unpleasant there were hundreds of them. Needless to say we had to move to the sofas that night.
A half empty can of ant spray was in our welcome pack but using it on bedding and in fridges is not what it's for.
The beds gave two of our party backache - the white sofas in the photos were grubby and covered with flimsy throws.
POSITIVES - the views were stunning. The pool was a good size and lovely and warm. It was incredibly peaceful- mostly the only sound was that of the sea. No mosquitoes - big bonus.
Cala'n Porter has a Beautiful beach - but accessed by 180 very steep steps after a 15 minute hike. The sea was very clean, calm and shallow so got quite warm We had an amazing large tapas seafood lunch there.
To summarize I would say that the Villa had the views that it promised but was totally unsuitable for the less able member of our party and meant that they felt tied to the villa. And that the word luxurious should have read cheap and cheerful - bordering on shabby.
Cala'n Porter is a lovely lovely place to stay with fab restaurants and a safe family feel and we are already looking for our 2014 villa.
