The Sardinia region
The beautiful isalnd of Sardinia set in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea between Italy and north Africa. DH Lawrence visited in the early 1920s and found it 'lost between Europe and Africa and belonging to nowhere' he compared it to Jerusalem, 'strange and rather wonderful, not a bit like Italy'. Sardinia is for adventurers, for those who want to lose the crowds, who are intrigued, not frightened, by civilizations that initially may seem inexplicable. Now within easy reach from the UK with a 2.30 mins flight. Sardinia is growing in popularity but still manages to retain its charm and exclusivity, as a holiday destination for all. Famous not only for its history but also for its natural beauty, its coastline is probably Europe's most spectacular. Its rugged mountains, pocked with caves, superb white sandy beaches; crystal clearaquamarine sea; huge limestone cliffs, walks through fantastic gorges, mountains and coastal paths. The Weather is generally good all the year round with highs of 39°C in August. The island has been inhabited since prehistoric times evident in the shape of nuraghi, conical stone buildings.constructed as defensive structures as well as homes. There are more than 700 of them remaining, with the Nuraghe Su Nuraxi one of the largest and most impressive. Sardinia became targets for invasion and the Sard people were all but wiped out in 176BC, when 25,000 islanders were slaughtered. The Sards fled to “The Barbagia” mountainous inland region where they took shelter, a marvellous mix of forested hillsides and meadows dotted with isolated hamlets. This explains the numerous beautiful, sandy and accessible beaches, good natural ports, with very little in the way of coastal villages and towns. The many invasions created an interesting influence in Sardinian food, wine, culture, architecture and archeology. Sardinian food is hearty rustic, wild boar, lamb and kid, suckling pig complemented with aubergines, artichokes, couscous and nougat and its excellent bread and salty percorino sardo cheese. Seafood is often excellent.
Cala Gonone area
Cala Gonone is easily reached from Olbia in 1 hour and from Alghero and Cagliari in 2½. It is small idyllic, unspoilt coastal village and with it’s beautiful beaches and aquamarine sea is well worth the trip. There are enough bars, hotels and apartments along the sea to have a good meal and evening out, but not enough to spoil the perfect setting. There are plenty of sports facilities tennis, windsurfing, waterskiing, canoeing, climbing, walking, horseriding, fishing or may be you just want to relax on 1 of it's many beaches.
