The Sardinia region
Famed for its fine sandy beaches and crystal clear seas, Sardinia used to be a rich mans playground. Since the arrival of the more sensitively priced airlines into Sardinia new places of discovery have opened up to the holiday tourist giving a much different feel to the English Spain’s of the world. Situated in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, Sardinia with its approx. 1.800 kilometres of coastline is one of the most popular destinations for people who love aquatic sports and seaside holidays, not only for its natural beauty and geographical position but also for its history. The many waves of invaders, who plundered and settled in Sardinia during the thousands of years of Sardinian history, came from the sea and for this reason the Sardinians, until recently, have never loved the sea and they built very few villages along the coast.
It is neither a coincidence nor a fashion that nowadays Sardinia is the preferred destination for many tourists. The sea around this large Mediterranean Island, second only to Sicily in size among all Mediterranean Islands, is among the most beautiful and transparent in the entire world. In fact D.H. Lawrence in his famous book 'The Sea and Sardinia' wrote that Sardinia was a land like no other and the Sardinian writer, Marcello Serra entitled one of his famous books "Sardinia: Almost a Continent", in order to underline the uniqueness of the Sardinian landscapes and the large and deep differences among the Island's various regions which make Sardinia similar to a continent.
In fact the Sardinian people are renowned for their spontaneous hospitality, and like all islanders thirst for contact with the external world. People who visit Sardinia discover not only one of the most beautiful and original places in the world but also have an unforgettable holiday. Sardinia offers visitors an array of gastronomic specialities from the ancient cooking traditions of the shepherds to the sea food specialities of the coast. Sardinia is rich in both handicrafts and arts, its carpets, baskets, pottery and its gold filigree jewellery are both unique and of the highest quality.
Cala Gonone, the one time small fishing village on the east coast of Sardinia is a delight. Only accessible from the sea before 1968 when a tunnel through the rock from Dorgali was cut. From the mountain town of Dorgali, you now drive through the tunnel for half a mile, and then get ready for the experience to begin. The land falls away in front of you, and as Cala Gonone can be seen down by the sea, you simply enjoy the 5 km of hairpin bends that weave down the mountain to arrive in Gala Gonone.
Cala Gonone area
During the hot summers, it sees many Italian and foreign visitors. Summers are pleasantly relaxing far away from the main typical English tourist spots. The tourists flood the beaches, bars, restaurants and discos in summer whilst in winter you can have the place to yourself for walking and rock climbing or mountain biking. Climbing in Cala Gonone is the reason for us buying the apartment in the first place as there is masses of it, being covered covered by 3 different guide books, but the beaches in the summer can match with ease the quality of the climbing.
Cala Gonone is a very pretty, small seaside resort of tranquil ness, with an unspoilt coastline extending over 40km, within the Orosei Gulf. Almost entirely devoid of concrete, its beaches – Cala Luna, Cala Sisine and Cala Mariolu – of various sizes, are among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean, interrupted only by coastal towers and harsh limestone cliffs. A holiday in Cala Gonone offers both an authentic return to nature, with fascinating sights from primitive times, and the most up-to-date and comfortable facilities available.
Cala Gonone has a number of beaches of its own with more at Cala Osalla and Cartoe only a 10 -15 minute drive away, and the drive will probably reach a relaxing speed of maybe 25 mph. The main village area is immersed in the green of ilexes and rosemary bushes and is equipped with modern hotel facilities, restaurants and a tourist harbour. Other parts of the resort can be easily reached on comfortable motorboats: Cala Luna, Biriola, and Miriola … all bays with golden sand and transparent water.
The sea, with its crystal-clear waters lapping around the various coves and ravines, hides numerous relics from the Second World War, providing a rare treat for intrepid divers. For beginners, or those looking to improve their diving skills, a number of schools exist. There are also excellent facilities for other sports such as tennis, with associations even organising competitive tournaments. Traditional sports such as football and volleyball are also catered for in Cala Gonone. Windsurfing, waterskiing, canoeing and fishing complete the spectrum of sports and make Cala Gonone the perfect choice for a relaxing, comfortable and, above all, fun holiday.
Cala Gonone is a magical place for walkers and rock climbers who visit on a regular basis. With visitors from all around Europe and beyond, these days it is a compulsory stop-off for whoever comes to the island. Its sea cliffs and mountain crags mix in a beautiful unrivalled picturesque setting to give one of the most spectacular panoramas in Sardinia. As a non climber, it is always interesting to walk from the tennis club area with football pitch and go kart track, to the huge climbing bowl of La Poltrana easily spotted above Cala Gonone, and watch the climbers doing their thing. Standing at the base of La Poltrana and looking upwards is quite inspiring. The walk is only 10 minutes from the car and the view tremendous.
After a long lazy day on yet another different beach or doing the activity of your choice you must return to enjoy in not just the delightful Italian cuisine but also delightful more local Sardinian cuisine accompanied by all the local wines from Oliena where the footballer Gianfranco Zola comes from. The wine didn’t do him much harm!

Guestbook
Dear Jeff & Wendy Just to say that we had a brilliant time in Sardinia! We really liked the flat and Cala Gonone - what a fabulous find, both the flat and the area! We particularly enjoyed having brekfast and dinner on the balcony overlooking the bay which was one of our highlights of the holiday. The surrounding area was great for walking - which we managed to do on several occasions - although hauling ourselves away from the beaches was sometimes a little hard! I can also see why climbers love it out there. You have found a couple of fans in us both. Hope you're well and thanks for everything,
Elspeth & Matthew (London)
Hi Jeff and Wendy The apartment was great thanks. Fantastic views! It was smart, clean, tidy and had everything we needed. The beaches were gorgeous and we particularly liked Gabbiani. Wish we were still there! Thanks again.

Dear Jeff, Sorry this has taken me so long to write. I just wanted to say that my friend Sarah and I had a great week in Cala Gonone. The apartment was perfect for us and Davide was really helpful. It’s a really beautiful village. We had a good time exploring the coast by boat and watching people climb up the Aguglia di Goloritze. Thanks for making renting the apartment so easy, I’ll definitely recommend it to others and hopefully will be back myself before long. Best wishes

Hi Jeff The apartment and Cala Gonone were wonderful. A glimpse of Heaven on Earth.. We would love to go back again next year if the apartment is available, we are just looking at diaries to establish which week. In the meantime, I have recommended your place to a friend of mine, Richard Miles, who may be in contact over the next week or so. Fantastic Holiday Jeff, thanks very much Regards Colin and Helen - Sandbach, England June 2007
