Home description

Wonderful ground and 1st floor apartment (split-level) on an exclusive development with communal gardens, pool and parking space. The complex is very private and quiet and the gardens and pathways are extremely well maintained. The apartment is located just a three minutes’ walk from two different sand beaches. The shared pool is only 20 metres away from the apartment private terrace. From the pool there is direct access to the sea by ladders from man-made platforms on the rocks which makes sea swimming excellent in quiet and crystal clear sea water.
The complex is in Cala Ferrera and within walking distance to Cala d’Or, both rather upmarket holiday resorts. Cala d’Or marina is full of beautiful yachts and fish restaurants overlooking the harbour. Ferrera Park Apartments is a quiet complex but close to all services and amenities: bars, restaurants, banks, doctor, supermarket, shops, children playgrounds, etc. One can walk everywhere and a car is not really necessary.
There is a boat tour that leaves nearby which takes you along the coast visiting Cala Figuera, the National Park beach of Cala Mondrago and other beautiful places. The 18 hole golf course of Vall D'or (www.valldorgolf.com) is only a 15 minute car journey away where you will find a lovely club house complete with restaurant and outside swimming pool.
Everything you need for family holiday is right on your doorstep. A local bus can take you into Palma for the day and local car hire/money exchange places can organise trips to many of Mallorca's attractions. A day out to Aqualand one of the islands water parks is a great day for the children and adults alike.

The Mallorca/Majorca region

Mallorca lies in the Mediterranean Sea off the south east coast of mainland Spain. Flying time from most UK airports is around 2 - 2.1/2 hours and on arrival local time is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. Son Sant Joan, which is the main tourist airport, is a large modern facility, and is located in the south of the island just outside the capital Palma. Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands and has something to offer everyone.

The capital Palma is a historical port town, with great shopping, museums and art galleries which are well worth visiting. With a population of over 300,000, Palma is the only real city of the Balearics yet its slow pace of life is quite distinct from the Spanish city's of the mainland. The centrepiece of its beautiful historic quarter with grand Renaissance mansions and Baroque churches is its Gothic cathedral which took over 500 years to build and as an attraction compares favourably with the better known cathedrals of Spain.
Most of the main sights of Palma are contained within the city walls and it's easy to explore on foot. If you can be there after nightfall it is a spectacular sight to see the floodlit Cathedral and the Almudaina Palace from the waterfront. As well as the historical interest of Old Palma there is also good shopping for the day visitor and a pleasant café culture to enjoy.

Bellver (meaning "beautiful view") Castle dates from the 14th century and is unique amongst Spanish castles thanks to its circular design. Built originally as a royal fortress located above the city, it attracts many visitors these days thanks to its magnificent views across the Bay of Palma towards the airport and beyond. The easiest way there is to take a taxi or to walk up through the woods behind the El Terreno part of town.

The island of Mallorca has outstanding beaches along all of its coastline. And with over 300 days of sunshine a year you can't go far wrong in choosing this island paradise for your beach holiday destination. The larger beach resorts with excellent sand include Magaluf and Palma Nova to the west of Palma and Puerto Pollenca and Alcudia on the north coast.

Sierra of Tramuntana: standing at 1445 metres above sea level, Puig Mayor is the highest point in Mallorca. Relatively few visitors leave their beach resorts so don't appreciate what a mountainous island they are on. A day spent driving down the northwest coast from Pollenca to Andratx is simply stunning with notable stops at Sa Calobra where you must follow a coastal path through tunnels in the cliffs to the amazing limestone gorge at Torrente de Pareis. You must also visit the village of Deia which has long been known as an artist's hang out where the likes of the poet Robert Graves and the artist Joan Miró resided. The monastery at Lluc is another important stop and you'll love all the villlages you pass through en route notably Banyalbufar and the quaint beach resort of Sant Elm with the island of Dragonera just off it.

A great day out from Palma is to take the train to Soller. This narrow gauge train has covered this route through the Serra de Tramuntana mountains since 1912. The one-hour trip leaves Palma from the rail station in Cala Eusebi Estada near the Plaça de Espanya. The journey is beautiful as the vintage train goes through some stunning countryside with orange, lemon and almond trees everywhere. On arrival in Soller you can get on Mallorca's first electric tram which will transport you at a snail's pace to the Port of Soller 5km away. There are different summer and winter timetables for this service. You can check the Soller Train Website for details.

Mallorca has some spectacular caves at various locations around the island. Probably the most spectacular are the Caves of Drach (Coves del Drach) at Portocristo. Today they represent one of the island's top attractions in which four spectacular chambers with thousands of stalactites are made even more impressive by the top quality lighting arrangements. A mini concert takes place on one of the underground lakes and visitors can take a boat ride steered by a gondolier at the end of the visit. Two other impressive cave are the Caves of Hams and the Caves of Arta.

In 1838 Frederic Chopin and George Sand arrived in Mallorca to continue their love affair in the idyllic town of Valldemossa in the Tramuntana mountains just 18km from Palma. Today in Valdemossa you can still buy the book "Winter in Mallorca" which George Sand wrote there in spite of the fact that it has little to say of a positive nature about their stay on the island. Apart from the natural beauty of the town, the principal architectural attraction is the Royal Carthusian Monastery which contains a selection of interesting museums dedicated to a variety of themes as well as the monk's cell where Chopin and Sand spent their brief time here.

There are so many wonderful attractions in Mallorca that there is sure to be something for everyone to see. So whether you are looking for thrills and excitement, history and local artefacts, or animals and the more exotic, you will not have to look far for attractions in Mallorca. The island is also a beautiful setting for walking, cycling and fishing holidays.

Marineland is one of Mallorca's most popular tourist attractions and is the only amusement park in the Balearic islands to feature performing dolphins and sea lions. The dolphins in Marineland are without a doubt the stars of the show and their regular displays of leaping acrobatics never fail to attract crowds. Marineland in Mallorca has many other attractions as well as the dolphins and these include the largest collection of sharks in the whole of Europe, a parrot circus, aquariums, crocodiles and a reptile zoo with large snakes. The park has a good breeding program and has successfully bred many of the animals in Marineland, including dolphins and sea lions.

Cala D'Or / Cala Ferrera area

The smart resort of Cala d'Or is part of the municipal district of Santanyí, on the southern half of the east coast of Mallorca. It is only around 65km, or 40 miles east of Palma and the Son Sant Joan International airport.

Cala d'Or today is a modern purpose built resort that has grown from a small traditional Mallorcan fishing village. Over the years the resort has expanded, and now covers an area of over 4km of small sandy coves and creeks. This growth has for the most part been controlled, and the town still has the feeling of a small village with few, if any, high rise buildings.

The largest of these coves is called Cala Llonga, which has been developed into a large marina. The focal point of the town centre is a pedestrian zone around the area of Cala d’Or and Cala Gran, which has a varied selection of shops, bars, restaurants, mini golf etc.

The beach at Cala Gran is the largest in the town. Near here is Cala d'Or itself, from which the resort takes its name. This is a pine fringed cove with a small beach. Sun loungers, parasols and pedaloes can be hired at both of these beaches. In addition, there is also around 8 or 9 other smaller sandy coves in the area. The closest sandy beaches to the apartment are Cala Ferrera and Cala Esmeralda, which are only a stroll away. A bit further you can walk to Cala Serena, a lovely, small and quite beach with crystal blue water. It is ideal for small children.

If the beaches at Cala d'Or become too crowded or if you wish to escape from Cala d'Or for the day, many visitors take the morning bus to Es Trenc. This beautiful beach of clear blue water and golden sand, backed by pine trees and dunes, stretches for almost 5km along the wild south eastern coast of the island. There's a small bar-restaurant here and you can hire sun umbrellas, but there are few other facilities and the beach rarely gets packed with bodies. Be warned though, Es Trenc is popular with nudists and the bodies that you do see are likely to be bare.

Public transport around all of the east coast is not good, so you may wish to consider car hire if you want to see more of the island. However, if you do have a good sense of adventure, the daily IB-33 bus runs into Palma several times each day, and information, along with further details of this service can be found in pdf format on the Transunion Mallorca sl web site.

If you do have access to your own transport, and can get out of the resort, the Sunday morning market at Felanitx is recognised as being one of the best in Majorca, and is well worth a visit. This is a good place to pick up some locally made pottery. Also certainly worth a mention are the fruit and produce markets which are held at nearby Santanyi every Wednesday and Saturday mornings. There are many street markets during the week in different nearby towns.

For evening entertainment the resort does have an increasing number of lively bars that tend to be centred around the pedestrian zone. However, all things considered, and in keeping with much of the east coast, Cala d'Or is generally a quiet low key resort that is perhaps more suited to those looking for a relaxing or family holiday.

Guestbook

Dear Maria,
We enjoyed our stay very much. The apartment is very nice, especially the big windows looking out over the terrace and the beautiful views. We thought this was a big bonus as it was good to have a view which was interesting even when it rained. I had the luxury of the main bedroom and the bed was very comfortable, and I think the others were OK in their rooms too.
Thanks so much for your recommendations on restaurants – we tried a few of them and all were excellent . We had the best paella we’ve ever eaten in HPC in Porto Colom (on a very wet and grey day!) and also went to Casa Maria in Cala Serena and to C’an Trompe on our last evening which was again an excellent meal with a very friendly waiter. We like to try local food and really enjoyed the small green pimientos (pintados?) and gambas with garlic – delicious! Also – we had lots of wine, mostly rioja – and also some local, all very good.
All the best
Zosia

Thanks Maria - yes we all enjoyed our stay and the apartment was just perfect. Although the weather was mixed we managed to see street markets in Felantix and Santanyi and also a good day at the Aqualand water park at El Arenal. The boys went swimming in the sea everyday.
Many thanks. Best wishes
Ian and Vivien.

Maria,
Thank you so much for letting us rent your apparment from the 7th to the 13th. Our holiday was fantastic and we all thoroghly enjoyed ourselves.
Thank you again,
Charlie Clarence-Smith

Hola Charo, hoy hemos salido del apartamento. Nos ha gustado muchísimo y pensamos repetir el año que viene, incluso más días.
