Sea Shore Cottage
Cottage | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4
This fully equipped, semi-detached, foreshore cottage has unforgettably close sea views. All the main windows look across Sinclair Bay towards Orkney and the Pentland Skerries lighthouse and as the tide comes in across the sheltered bay, you could be watching a living oil painting of ocean surf.
Downstairs Sea Shore Cottage has an open plan living room and kitchen. Upstairs both bedrooms overlook the sea to the north with a view of the two mile long open access sandy beach at Reiss visible just beyond the restored castle owned by a millionaire. Just one field (sometimes with cows) between you. (See the Ackergill Tower website to see how the 1% live! At about £1,000 per night!)
Sea Shore Cottage now has WiFi and If needed, an ink-jet printer/photocopier/scanner can be rented at low cost.
We appreciate how difficult it is for renal patients to find a holiday destination: if you are on dialysis, please contact us as we are able to put you in touch with suitable facilities.
Caithness might seem far north but is still south of all of Norway and is well worth the 100 miles, two hour scenic seaside journey up from Inverness. Being on the East coast, midges are virtually never a problem; yet, facing west, the view from the living room of the sun setting over the castle, with every wave of a high tide being tinged with pink has to be seen to be believed.
lf you love the sea and tranquillity this is the place for you to sit and unwind or to go for car free and carefree shoreline walks. At high tide, with only the sea and the surf visible through the windows, you could even be at sea without the seasickness. Orcas are regularly visible, seabirds and seals abound. Guests even sometimes see our shy sea otters.
If you have a dog who needs walking Ackergill Haven is ideal as it lies a the end of a mile long no through road down from the main A99 to the handful of houses and the small harbour. So there is no through traffic whatsoever. Walks along the coast in either direction are totally car free.
For those who enjoy eating out there are in Wick several excellent local hotels and even a gourmet French Restaurant. Don't miss the Guinness book of records "Shortest street in the world" at Mackays friendly hotel (Give my greeting to Murray). Wick regularly hosts a sea boat/harbour festival and sometimes has fly-ins for light aircraft.
Further afield in Scrabster (20 miles) both the Upper Deck and the distinctively ethical Captain's Galley ("Which" Best Fish Restaurant in the UK: 2008) are highly recommended - The Castle of Mey and Grinigoe / Sinclair castle ruins are well worth visits, while the hinterland is a major bird sanctuary. Thurso has a world class surfing beach.
Sea Shore Cottage is virtually a total re-build of what used to be the Boathouse Annexe of next-door Sea Otter Cottage (also available to rent), and is now a completely self-contained dwelling. It was only ready for occupancy in July 2013 so do check what introductory offers and discounts might be available.
We welcome you to come and enjoy the first year in our newly renovated cottage. We guarantee that you are unlikely to be disappointed. Several guests plan to return as soon as they can. Their comments can be seen on the website.

Drive just out on the A99 towards John O'Groats, then turn right and drive straight towards the sea.
Ackergill Haven consists of a few houses with a small harbour only 2 miles from Wick town centre.
A beautiful location, right on the shoreline. Unlike Scotland's West coast never been problems with midges.
Breathtaking views of the ocean swell just outside the windows. At high tide it's hard to believe you aren't on a boat - with stunning evenings as the sun sets slowly over the distant restored Ackergill Tower (see their website to compare prices)
Wonderful for star gazers thanks to the very low light pollution.
Ideal stopover to unwind with friends after cycling from Land's End to John O'Groats
(reductions for sponsored charity adventurers)
or for travellers going to or from Orkney via the Gills Bay Ferry
Places of interest Include: Wick Heritage Museum, The Castle of Mey, Mary Ann's Cottage Museum, Camster Cairns, Waligoe Steps, Wick's refurbished Harbour, Hill of Many Stones, Old Pulteney Distillery, Dunnet Head, (Check the map for this true northmost cliff top, and far more impressive than the John O'Groats car park and tourist trap)

"A haven of peace and quiet"
We recently stayed for 3 nights at Seashore cottage and had a wonderful time. The location is beautiful and incredibly quiet, the views are exceptional and very relaxing. The cottage itself is lovely … More
Working on some ideas for a place outside to make easier to enjoy the sunsets over the castle but without disturbing those in Sea Otter next door. For the present maybe some seats on the grass just outside the fence would do. Will see what is feasible when we come up next week to finish some outstanding work (e.g. Blinds downstairs, shaver socket in bathroom, check on progress repairing winter storm damage to the fence, and see what can be done to make it easier to get to the beach)

"good place to chill (soon)"
we stayed at the newly renovated sea shore cottage, the cottage was new and everything was immaculate there was also nice touches, toiletries, tea, coffee, sugar etc, towels in the bathroom and bedrooms. There was a great view out to the water. The cottage had only just been renovated and this was evident by the the amount of rubble lying outside, drain pipe and part of the roof not finished (although this didn't make any difference to our stay) no blinds or curtains on the ground floor and nowhere to sit outside to enjoy the view, once these small things are finished it will be a fantastic place to go to chill out reading a book while watching the sea and wildlife, its also handy for Gills Bay which is an hours ferry ride to Orkney
Builders now finished (at last). Roof tiles etc now done (at last). Rubble removed (at last). Blinds due to be installed shortly.
Need accepted for an outside place to full appreciate the view. This is planned but will probably take until spring to achieve
