The Queensland / Far North region

Welcome to Queensland, Australia. The "Sunshine State". "Beautiful one day, perfect the next". With a climate ranging from subtropical in the south to tropical in the north, the beach and water based activities lure holiday makers from all over the world.

Tropical North Queensland has a year round warm climate. Spring and autumn bring average temperatures ranging from about 18 degrees celsius to 30 degrees celsius. Winter (June - September) is the peak tourist season with average temperatures from about 15 degrees celsius to 27 degrees celsius. Summer (December - March) is also known as the "green season" with average temperatures from about 21 degrees celsius to 30 degrees celsius.

The "green season" is when you can expect to experience an afternoon or evening tropical downpour. Its therefore the best season to see the rainforest, mountains and waterfalls at their best.

Cairns / Port Douglas area

How do you spend a week or a month or more in paradise?

Port Douglas is the jewel in the crown of Tropical North Queensland. This five-star international destination is nestled between the dual World Heritage areas of the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest as well as the Atherton Tablelands and with many other world class attractions and venues within easy reach, Port Douglas deserves plenty of time to explore and enjoy.

Why not start by watching the sun rise over beautiful Four Mile Beach or take a long romantic "stroll" at dusk on this world famous beach. Tour the nearby Mossman Gorge for a close-up view of the rainforest and the often raging waters of the Mossman River. Or explore the World Heritage Daintree Rainforest, the oldest rainforest on earth. See crocodiles in the wild on the Daintree River. Visit one or all of the many fantastic eco-tourist options in the rainforest itself. Experience living mangroves, the canopy tower, tropical fruit farms, even an ice-cream factory.

The Great Barrier Reef should be on the top of your "must do" list. There's no shortage of vessels ranging from small sailing boats to large, fast catamarans to take you there. You can swim, snorkel, dive, water ski or even experience the whales (in season). "Migaloo", an extremely rare white whale, often makes an appearance off Port Douglas in whale-watching season.

Visit the multi-award winning "Rainforest Habitat" Wildlife Sanctuary where you can have breakfast with the birds, lunch with the kangaroos or dinner with the Koalas. You can also view dangerous saltwater crocodiles close up but in complete safety.

What about some fishing? Take your pick, beach, rock, estuary, reef, blue-water, you name it, we've got it. There are charter boats big and small to take you where the action is, or you can just find a quiet wharf, beach, river or rock to sit on and ponder while chasing a feed. And don't forget about the famous "mud crab", a real delicacy in Port Douglas.

Take a helicopter ride for a bird's eye view of the Rainforest and the Reef. How about a hot air balloon at dawn over the ranges. An ultra-light flight along the beaches or maybe hang-gliding or bungy jumping is more your style. And you can't miss the fantastic Skyrail skimming over the rainforest canopy to Kuranda.

"Retail therapy, did I hear you say ?" Spend some time in Port Douglas village or Marina Mirage village at the many boutiques and arts and crafts galleries. There's a bargain inside every door. And don't forget to visit the Port Douglas Market each Sunday. You can buy just about anything from the hundreds of artists, crafts people and growers who enjoy the day just as much as the visitors.

Into sport ? A game of golf - there are 6 manicured courses within easy reach to test out that new driver or putter. Go-kart racing, white-water rafting, catch a local "footy" game (Aussie Rules or Rugby), para-sailing, horse riding, horse racing, cycling, and yes, even cane toad racing. The list is endless.

But above all else, Port Douglas is about dining. Have breakfast, lunch or dinner at one of the many world class restaurants or simply enjoy a casual "pub meal" watching the boats come and go. Fine dining in the rainforest or a snack and a beer (or a mango daiquiri) on the balcony of the "Courthouse" or the "Combined Club", and everything in between. The cuisine is international, specialising in the best seafood in the world (yes we are biased but for good reason).

And when you thought you've done it all, the night clubs open their doors and rage to the wee small hours every night.

But of course you can always just sit, read, watch a good movie or game, sleep, stroll, drink (it's good drinking weather) or otherwise simply relax. There's nothing wrong with that and plenty do it. And with over 80% of the shire still in its natural state, there's plenty of room to do it in.

A popular saying around here is "We came for a week and stayed for a lifetime". So do yourself a favour and don't miss Port Douglas on your next trip "down under".

How to get there

You can fly directly to Cairns International Airport (CNS) or transit from any capital city in Australia. There are also rail connections from the south (Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane) or cruise ships call into both Cairns and Port Douglas.

Port Douglas is approximately 70 kilometres (45 miles) north of Cairns. Rental cars, limousines and shuttle buses to Port Douglas are available at Cairns Airport and the rail and shipping terminals.

Rental cars, limousines, taxis, bike hire and local buses are available in Port Douglas.

All Port Douglas tour operators will pick you up and drop you off from The Villa for any tours you book. Therefore you may decide not to hire a car at Cairns and only hire a car in Port Douglas if and when you require it (although there can be shortages in peak season).

Please let me know if you would like more information on these.

The Villa has proved to be the highlight of our visit to Australia - absolute paradise. We will certainly return.

David S and family, UK, August 2007
This is the best Villa we have ever stayed in - in UK, USA or Australia.

Caroline, Paul and Suzanne, April 2007
This is the most awesome villa, from our arrival to our departure it felt like we were in heaven! Christine has not only thought of everything you are ever likely to need, she genuinely cared about the quality of our holiday and did EVERYTHING (and more!) that she could to make it an outstanding holiday for us. We had the best time, and are hoping to go back very soon. Some of the things that impressed us - the cleanliness of the villa, the home from home facilities - from the sugar in the cupboard, to the tv controls, the file of information for people staying, the thoughtfulness of the kitchen - both in layout as well as equipment (we love cooking!) the ease in which we settled in and made it our home, the excellent quality of all the fixtures and fittings - just everything. We couldn't have faulted it - even if we had tried to! In fact I really wished I had taken my slippers it felt so much like home! Finally to Christine who is an outstanding host and landlady - her care and attention were remarkable. From meeting us and taking us through the estate to the villa to helping us with tours and great meals (do go to the Salsa bar for dinner). I wish there had been and was a Christine at every venue we stayed in!

Kerrie and family, January 2007
This is a well appointed villa - we felt instantly comfortable. We wanted for nothing and the service was wonderful. Thank you for an absolutely fabulous holiday. We were able to enjoy our time in Port Douglas without feeling we needed to take a second mortgage on our home. Finally a quality place to stay in Port Douglas at reasonable prices.

Linda and family, December 2006
We are experienced travellers who always stay in private accommodation. This is the best holiday villa we have ever stayed in. Much better than we anticipated. We loved returning home to it after a day out "touristing". We loved the open plan tropical feeling and my teenagers didn't want to leave.
