The Midi-Pyrenees region

For sightseers there are many places worth a visit within a relatively short distance of Le Vert including spectacular Rocamadour, with its buildings clinging to the cliffside, Padirac's enormous caverns and underground lake, Pech-Merl's superb cave paintings, the picturesque village of St Cirq Lapopie (recently voted nationally 'The village preferred by the French'), the riverside villages along the Lot, the magnicent chateaux high above the Dordogne river, the medieval town of Sarlat, Albi with its magnificent brick Cathedral and the Toulouse Lautrec Museum, Moissac and its Cloisters, which are listed as a World Heritage Site, the bastide towns of Monflanquin, Monpazier and Villereal.

The scenery is very varied from the white stone cliffs above the River Lot to the gentle slopes of the Vineyards, and the wild Causse area to the north-east of Cahors.

Cahors

We are 20 kms west of the beautiful medieval City of Cahors, the main City of the Lot, which is bound within a loop of the River Lot. The main tree-lined Boulevard Gambetta, rising up from the river, has an abundance of pavement cafes and restaurants, and to the east of this is the Cathedral, Market Square, and numerous narrow streets lined with medieval houses and a wide variety of interesting small shops. Cahors is famous for its 700 year old medieval bridge, the Pont Valentre, but there is much more to the City than that.

Prayssac (9 kms to the north) is a typical small town with all the facilities you might need, and really comes alive on Friday mornings when there is a wonderful Farmer's Market around the Church. It has restaurants, bars, boulangeries, supermarkets, and a Post Office.

Montcuq (9 kms to the south) is a very beautiful little village, which is particularly lively on Sunday mornings, when it has a Market though the narrow streets. It has bars, restaurants, a supermarket, boulangeries, butchers, etc. The Lake at Montcuq is particularly attractive for families, with its clean water and a sandy beach.

During the Summer months in particular there are many activities, including the well-known Cahors Blues Festival, Les Saveurs du Lot gastronomic festival, Night Markets in Cahors, Prayssac and Luzech, Wine Festivals, Concerts, Theatre, Fireworks, Repas Gourmand (purchase your food and join others at long tables, accompanied by a live band). It is often difficult to choose from a number of different events on at the same time.

"From the moment you arrive you feel so at home you know you won't want to leave."

We had a lovely week at La Loge. It's a beautiful place to get away from everything but still be close enough to markets and places of interest without travelling for ages. It is certainly a bea… More
