The Cahir area
The town of Cahir is built on the River Suir. This river is the second longest river in Ireland. It is a centre of excellence for Brown Trout and Salmon. Beginners and experienced fishing enthusiasts are sure to enjoy many happy hours of fruitful fishing along its banks.
The area of Cahir Park/Swiss Cottage is one of the best in Europe. 6 new platforms have recently been erected on this stretch which makes it very accessible to wheelchair users. Angling Guides are also available to assist you.
Once the stronghold of the powerful Butler Family, the Castle retains its impressive keep and much of its original defensive structure. It is one of Ireland's largest and best preserved castles. It is situated on a rocky island on the River Suir and the town of Cahir grew up around it. It hosts many exhibitions and has an audio-visual show. It is open to the public for the greater part of the year. Many famous films have been made in and around this castle, including Excalibur.
Cahir is known as the crossroads of the South. Cork, Limerick, Waterford are all approximately 50 miles away. Dungarvan, Lismore, Cappoquinn and the famous Cistercian Abbey of Mount Melleray are less than an hour away through the spectacular Vee pass through the Knockmeldown Mountains. To see the amazing view of this mountain side completely clothed in rhododendrons you should visit late May/June.
Here too are nature walks to suit all categories, with or without supervisors. Other beautiful walks include along the banks of the river Suir from Cahir to Swiss Cottage. This cottage which was originally built as a hinting/fishing lodge for the gentry and is now a tourists delight.
GOLF: Cahir Park Golf Club is an 18 hole championship course and is only 1 mile away. There is a Professional on site. Tuition, caddy cars, clubs are available here. Very good rates apply.
Local Hotels and Pubs supply various types of entertainment and there are Restaurants to suit all palettes and pockets so visitors will not go hungry!!!
