This property is a converted schoolhouse in the heart of the beautiful Ring of Kerry between the mountains and the sea. It is 3 kms from the bustling market town of Cahirsiveen. It was built in 1877 and was a school until the 1970s. Then it was converted into a comfortable dwelling and was the holiday home of a former Irish president for some years.

It is set in a beautiful location, surrounded by mountains and within view of the sea. it is an ideal escape from the bustling world outside. There is a fishing harbour nearby and a sandy blue flag beach 4 kms away.

There are beautiful gardens front and rear and the mild climate is noticeable from the variety of plants, shrubs and palm trees in the extensive gardens.

The present owner has refurbished it recently and the cottage for rent is the senior school of the old two bedroomed schoolhouse.

It consists of a large lounge ,extensive modern kitchen-cum-dining room , hall and large shower room downstairs. Upstairs there is a large family bedroom and two smaller rooms, one a double and one a single room. The decor is stylish and contemporary but retains old world charm with ceiling beams and cottage decor. The cottage is full of light with spectaular views from the windows.

The County Kerry region

The Ivreagh Peninsula is in Southwest Ireland in a scenic area called the Ring of Kerry. This area includes Ireland's highest mountains(the Magillacuddy Reeks), lakes , islands, a rugged coastline and many fine beaches. It boasts of a very mild climate and the vegetation is lush and mediterranean. There are many first class amenities such as luxury hotels and upmarket restaurants as well as outdoor activities such as hill walking , golfing and sea sports.

Coonanna schoolhouse is situated about halfway between the market town of Cahirsiveen (ancestral home of the great Irish patriot Daniel O Connell) and the pretty harbour of Coonanna; 3 kms in each direction. It lies at the foot of a mountain called Cnoc na dTobar (Mountain of the Wells), a sacred site in both pre and post Christian times. There are many archaeological monuments nearby such as pre-historic stone forts and medieval ruins of ancient castles.

Valentia island is a short ferry crossing away. Waterville , with its world-class links golf course, is 15 kms away. It was to the town of Waterville that Charlie Chaplin brought his large family on holidays every year and where he indulged in his favourite past-time of fishing.

There are also many excellent sandy beaches nearby such as the White Strand , Kells Bay Ballinaskelligs beach , all which have Blue Flags.

The proximity of the ocean ensures that the seafood is excellent and varied. In Cahirsiveen itself there is also a marina where one can hire a boat or go on a trip to the nearby Skellig Rocks, a UNESCO site.

The Kerry way, a 200km walking and cycling route passes near the schoolhouse. There are also bicycles available in the house if you wish to go on a cycle tour.

The schoolhouse is a hour from Kerry airport and 3 hours by car from the Cork ferries to England and France.
