Home description
Westcove House sleeps ten comfortably - two doubles, two twins, two adjoining single bedrooms and five bath/shower rooms. For larger groups The Stables, a recently refurbished old stone building, 50 meters from the house, sleeps up to a further 11 (see separate advert 46961). A further 5 people can now be accommodated in 'Garden Cottage' - 50 metres from Westcove House, also with stunning views over Kenmare Estuary (for more details see our website at the bottom of the page). A huge Games Room and Studio are situated in The Stables. The Games Room also converts well into a small meeting room.
Irish live music/dancing evenings can be arranged for special celebrations - very popular with all ages! These facilities are also approachable from the outside and are shared by mutual agreement when let separately. The terrace to the front of the house is stone-clad and faces south, overlooking the Kenmare Estuary with steps leading down to the water's edge. It has a built-in barbecue and comfortable outside furniture. A rowing boat is available at tenant's own risk. Sea and lake fishing can be arranged.

The County Kerry region
Westcove is an ideal base from which to explore the many fascinating areas in this, the most scenic corner of Ireland. There are numerous possible excursions: north to Killarney with its famous lakes, northwest to the legendary Dingle Peninsular, west to Waterville, Balliskellings and Valencia Island, from where you can take an unforgettable boat trip to the Skelligs.
To the south lies Bantry Bay, which is reached via spectacular mountain passes. Kerry and West Cork are dotted with wonderful tropical gardens, especially beautiful in May and June. The countryside immediately surrounding Castlecove is ideally suited for all types of walking, ranging from gentle strolls along lovely sandy beaches to more serious hikes over craggy hills. The famous 'Kerry Way' walk takes you along the ridge of hills, all the way from Waterville to Kenmare and is well signed, but still wonderfully unspoiled.
Watersports: You can swim, row and shrimp nearby and there are several sandy beaches within ten minutes drive. Derrynane, 4 miles away, has an excellent watersports centre in the summer - with facilities for all ages, including water-skiing, windsurfing, sailing and canoeing. Scuba diving facilities are also available locally.
Fishing: Salmon, trout and sea fishing can be arranged locally. Some of our visitors enjoy spinning for bass, mullet etc. from nearby beaches and rocks. (More details below on this page)
Shooting: During the winter, challenging shooting over the wild stretches of bog land for woodcock and snipe can be arranged. Irish gun licences must be obtained in advance.
Riding: Beach riding and pony trekking are available 2 miles away at Caherdaniel. Eating Out: There are several excellent and varied restaurants around. The convivial atmosphere of the Irish pub is legendary - the whole family can be assured of a very warm welcome, and after closing time, during the summer, there are often discos for the young, and 'young at heart'!
Golf: There are five excellent and varied golf courses within ¾ of an hours drive of Westcove.
Caherdaniel area
A few suggestions for “Outings” within 15 minutes drive: Derrynane: go straight on to visit Derrynane House – a fascinating insight into Irish history – the house of Daniel O’Connell, “The Liberator”. The house and gardens are also worth a tour … in summer the tea rooms have an irresistible selection of home-made cakes.
Caherdaniel: stop for a Guinness at Freddy’s – a well known local pub which has been there forever, or go to The Blind Piper – a younger atmosphere and excellent food. In summer, there’s a market in the village hall between 10 and 12 on Friday mornings – well worth a visit – lots of local produce and crafts. There is also an excellent food market on Sundays.
Arguably the best example of a pre-Christian fort in Ireland, Staigue Fort is less than 15 mins drive away. Well worth a visit, especially on a clear day, when the views out over the Atlantic are breathtaking.
Local Walks: If you just want a stroll along the dunes (dogs paradise with endless rabbit burrows) go to the beautiful beaches and dunes of Derrynane. There are a couple of excellent, slightly more challenging walks you can try, starting from Westcove itself.
How to get there
* By air: From London you can fly to CORK (Aer Lingus or Ryan Air) or KILLARNEY (Kerry Airport) (Ryan Air from Stansted, Luton and Manchester) and hire a car. Several other UK airports also offer flights to Cork.
* BY SEA: The most direct sea crossing from the UK to South West Ireland is from Swansea to Cork, via the new Fastnet Line (tel: 00353-214555666), starting in March, 2010. Do check their website - www.fastnetline.com. This is an overnight crossing, but saves many hours of driving time at both ends. There is also a choice of sailings from the South West of England to Rosslare, on the south-eastern tip of Ireland:- a) Stenaline – operate two daily 3½ hour crossings (all year) and two daily 1¾ hour high speed sailings (from March to September) from Fishguard. b) Irish Ferries – also operate twice daily crossings to Rosslare from Pembroke, which take 4 hours, but the driving time from London takes half an hour less than to Fishguard, and their cabins are much more comfortable.
* There is no public transport, so a car is essential. * Access to Westcove House: Follow the road straight through Castlecove for one mile and, after passing some derelict buildings on your left, take the second turn on your left at a small crossroads. After about 100 yards bear right, the entrance to Westcove House is directly in front of you. Proceed over the cattle grid, with a stone wall on either side, and park by the grass circle.

Guestbook for Westcove house
"I can't tell you how much we enjoyed ourselves at Westcove ..... the houses are so comfortable and 'well appointed and Katherine is kindness itself and so co-operative and adaptable .... we found the whole system of her cooking some meals with some coming out of the freezer very relaxing and easy to fit in with... All the details like lovely sweet peas when we arrive and fresh vegetables from the garden raised it well above any of the other houses we have rented over the years." (AB, Cornwall)"We have now settled back into our home routine after what I must describe as the holiday of our lifetimes. We had an incredibly happy time, with all our friends, the most enjoyable few weeks we can remember. We love this part of Ireland but staying in The House and Stables added a unique dimension. We felt very privileged to be able to share such a special place and had enormous pangs of regret when it came to leave." (KD, Midlands)"The birthday dinner was a huge success - beautiful lamb and perfect pavlova - Bernie whipped us all into shape and got everyone dancing - the music was terrific and so much appreciated by all, but most of all by my Irish husband." (FT, Devon)
