The Sardinia region
Sant'Antioco is the second minor Italian island after the Isle of Elba. As a matter of fact it is a 'false island in that it is joined to Sardinia by a very old isthmus built by the Carthaginians. It has a millenary history. The Phoenicians were the first to reach the coasts of Sardinia in the IX century B.C. and to build Sulcis on the island of Sant'Antioco.
The island of Sant' Antioco has a surface are of 108 sq.km, and comprises two settlements, Sant'Antioco and Casaletta, with their respective communities of Maladroxa and Cussorgia. The population is around 15,000 inhabitants, and the territory is largely uninhabited, with isolated houses in the countryside. Tourists can seek out unspoilt landscapes and coastlines, reached only by boat or via foot or mountain bike. Good asphalt roads link the the best beaches with the interior.
In spring the island is filled with fantastic colours and fragrances. Fresh tuna, lamb and grilled pork are its most renowned dishes. Two wines are produced here: Sardus Pater and Trebbiano. www.mondosardegna.net www.sant-antioco.it
Cagliari / Sant'Antioco area
Amongst the most celebrated beaches (reached in a few minutes on provincial road 76) are Maladroxia and Co'e Cuaddus, equipped with showers, snacks and lifeguards. The spectacular promontary of Turri is dominated by the picturesqu Toore Cannai, constructed by the Piedmontese. From this part of the coast are visible three small uninhabited islands with curious names; Bull, Cow, and Calf!
