Home description
This is a simple but adored attic flat just renovated after five years family use. It is 80m2, plus a communal terrace with views to Africa. We all love it at any time of year and now that the restoration of the top of the house is complete, feel others would enjoy it. Our friend Inma lives round the corner and speaks fluent English. (Her husband is British). She will welcome visitors. She has lived in Cadiz all her life and knows it all: she sometimes works as a tourist guide for the city and for Seville and is doing a degree in tourism. The flat and the house are peaceful: in summer the hum of conversation from the restaurants can be heard late at night from the terrace. You will enjoy walking anywhere in Cadiz from the flat. My daughters like the shops. I like the market and the flea-markets: in fact I just love being in Cadiz. In summer you may want a siesta, followed by an evening swim before a drink and a meal. The flat is well equipped for cooking the day's catch bought in the market in the morning.

The Costa de la Luz / Cadiz Province region
The Costa de la Luz , the coast of light, is less developed than the other coasts of Spain. It is the place chosen by the Spanish themselves for their holidays. It is hot in summer and warm throughout the year. It is almost always sunny. Rain is rare in summer. The climate of Cadiz is moderated by sea breezes.
The region has miles of golden beaches and lively cities including Sevilla, Jerez and the old port city of Cadiz. You will not want a car in Cadiz and parking can be a problem. hire from the station if you do decide you want to visit the white hilltop towns and beaches of Andalucia. There will be sherry bodegas and vineyards for tasting. The local wine is excellent and cheap. A bottle of Barbadillo, my white favourite, is about 5 euros: excellent Riojas are about the same.
Cadiz / Cadiz Old City area
Cadiz is 3,000 years old: the oldest city in Europe. It is an ancient former island, a multi-faceted jewel. The city has a relaxed and civilised atmosphere, varied architecture, wonderful plazas, great tapas restaurants, cafes, and bars. The fish market (newly restored) is an must, with massive whole tuna and about 12 varieties of prawns, for example. Fruit and veg and the meat (usually organic) and cheeses are all excellent: we buy kilos of oranges and tomatoes and try anything we don't recognise. The Gaditani ( the people of Cadiz) are gentle and charming and not at all tired of tourists. The university, between the flat and the beach, assures a young atmosphere. Cadiz is like a hexagon about a mile in diameter. This makes it wonderful for walking. It is tightly packed with something to see all the time. The narrow streets have balconied windows above the ground floor, so they are shaded from the sun. The city - particularly the enormous cathedral, which dominates a lovely square where there is nearly always some street entertainment, was used as Havana in the James Bond film "Die Another Day". 200 yards from the flat is the balnearia and the lovely curved and gentle beach where Halle Berry walked out of the sea to Pierce Brosnan. It has forts and fishing boats (and open-air fish restaurant) in the background. There is a long promontory to one fort. The flat is on the corner of a lovely acacia-lined square with central fountain and three restaurants. 100 yards to sea, park and main squares. Carnival is in February and focuses on the Theatre Falla, in another square 100 yards behind the flat. Holy Week is another important time, with colourful and slow processions through the city. Along the spit leading to the island of Cadiz is a perhaps three mile beach, lined with restaurants and more modern shops. Designer shops are mainly in the old city.
