The Lombardy / Lake Como Area
Lake Como offers something quite magical and still; it's blue waters and backdrop of snow-capped mountains makes for a peaceful and memorable experience.
Having featured in many movies such as Star Wars and Ocean's Twelve starring George Clooney who recently purchased Villa Oleandra in nearby Laglio, it has also hosted some of the most famous writers such as Byron, Stendhal, Shelley, Liszt and Rossini as well as diplomats and members of royalty for centuries.
Lake Como has become such a desirable destination that tourists from all over the world are now flocking to see it! Once an area completely covered by glaciers, today the Adda river makes its long 313 km journey from the Swiss alps into Lake Como forming its distinctive "upside-down Y" shape. At 410 m deep and an area of 146 km squared, it's Europe's deepest and 3rd largest lake.
People come to experience the lake's magnificent beauty and serenity, as well as its mild climate and pleasant temperatures year-round.
You can sample some of the best cuisine in Italy on the lake, with mouth-watering dishes like “risotto con pesce persico” made from the fish of the lake! Some people fall in love with the hand-made crafts made from wood or silk created by skilled local craftsmen. In fact 80% of Europe’s silk comes from the Como Lake region.
The younger generation loves the incredible variety of water-sports such as wind-surfing, kayaking, canoeing, water-skiing and sailing. However, you can also truly seek solitude and benefit from Lake Como's mysterious ‘healing’ properties (some locals have told us about this) while escaping from the grind of a fast-paced lifestyle.
Cadenabbia Griante area
Cadenabbia is an ideal location for those that want to explore the delights that Lake Como has to offer. The stunning buildings and architecture that line the lake road serve as the perfect backdrop for a relaxing cycle or walk, enabling you to capture all the charm and enchantment of the lake, as you go. Sample the local cuisine in Cadenabbia or the neigbouring village of Tremezzo as you watch the world go by.
Take a short stroll to the beautiful Villa Carlotta in the village of Cadenabbia. The most famous villa on the lake, Villa Carlotta, has a perfect combination of luxurious interiors (beautiful stuccos, lovely ceiling frescoes and a great art collection, including an Eros and Psyche by Antonio Canova) and luxuriant exteriors (over 500 species of plants, trees and shrubs from all over the world).
Hop on the ferry for a trip to Bellagio, la perla del lago (the pearl of the lake), considered by many to be the most beautiful town in all of Europe. Its narrow cobbled streets, breathtaking views, impeccable homes and glorious villas make it a most enchanting spot.
Venturing a little further, and just a short drive away, is Menaggio. It's picturesque harbour features mostly 19th century Italian alpine style buildings, all painted in muted tones. Sit in the square and do as the Italians do and watch the girls go by! Although peaceful and relaxing, there is a lot to explore in this classically Italian town. The old and "new", the shops, restaurants, cafes, public squares and alleyways, the tree shaded lakeshore promenades bordered by flowers, and the well-kept villas form a wonderful and serene place to holiday.
If you are planning your trip in June, you may experience the oldest historic festival on the Lake, the Sagra de San Giovanni, which is held on the last weekend of June. It is a weekend long festival of folk art and old world charms. The main attraction comes after sundown when hundreds of floating lamps are cast onto the lake, and this is accompanied by a series of fireworks. This festival of lights illuminates the lake and makes for a spectacular sight that continues into the early hours of the morning. The locals continue the celebration with an early morning parade of decorated boats, following by a full day of folk dancing, traditional music and plenty of tasty food.
September is when the traditional rowing race on Lake Como takes place. Palio Remiero del Lario attracts teams from around Lombardy, who come to take part in the grueling competitions.
Como's untouched beauty has been a hot topic in travel guides and glossy magazines throughout the world, especially since George Clooney's much publicised purchase of Villa Oleandra in the town of Laglio. Other celebrity neighbours include Donna Versace and Michael Schumacher.
How to get there
Getting to Lake Como is simple. A range of airlines fly daily including British Airways, BMI Baby, Alitalia and Easyjet, to Milan's two airports; Malpensa International Airport, to the northwest, is 40 miles from Como and has a bus service to the town of Como. The smaller Linate Airport to the east serves flights from Europe and within Italy and is connected to Milan by bus service.
Lake Como lies on the Milan to Switzerland train line. The train stops in the town of Como, where there is a tourist office in Piazza Cavour. The Ferrovia Nord Milano, a small train line that leaves Como from via Manzoni, runs only between Como and Milan.
Ferries link the major villages and towns of Lake Como, providing both a good form of public transportation and a great way to sight-see from the lake. There is also a bus system to villages around the lake.

Guestbook for Villa Lucia

"Beautiful. Stunning. Breathtaking. Ideally located. Comfortable. It was like staying in our own little palazzo on the lake." Mary Kay, Hampshire
