The Costa Blanca/Valencia region
The main attraction for holidaymakers (especially north Europeans) is of course the wonderful climate, with over 300 days of sunshine each year and very low rainfall, it is the perfect location for a relaxing summer holiday or a well earned winter break. Sunshine is virtually guaranteed from May to October so it is not necessary to confine visits to the popular months of July and August. In the months of December and January the Costa Blanca normally enjoys some beautiful sunny days, so it is a great place to take a break away from the dismal weather of the UK and other north European countries.
For many it may even be a mistake to visit during July and August as temperatures can soar into the 40's and for some this is simply too hot. If visiting during these months make sure you bring plenty of high factor sun lotion for yourself and particularly for young children, if in doubt try to confine your visits to the cooler months. May and October are usually beautiful and sunny but without the uncomfortable high temperatures, June and September can also be very hot.
The Costa Blanca has some of the best beaches in Spain and they are usually very well cared for and safe, there are a large number of 'blue flag' beaches and these are normally cleaned every day and will often have life-guards on duty during the busy summer months. Some of the more popular beaches can get very busy during July and August but if you take some time to explore a little, you may find quiet and isolated beaches even during the high season.
Overall the Costa Blanca has much to offer holidaymakers and tourists of all types, fine beaches for sun lovers, ancient towns and cities for culture lovers and wonderful natural parks for nature lovers. Try a visit some time soon and enjoy a little of what the Costa Blanca has to offer.
Recreational and Sporting activities
Whatever your passion, there's a leisure activity available for you with plenty of opportunities to try something new too. World famous golf courses such as Villamartin, Las Ramblas and Campoamor are of championship quality. Most of the resorts have facilities for any water sport you could dream of, including swimming, scuba diving, yachting, wind surfing, fishing, jet-skiing and parasailing. Travelling further inland, you can hike along trails through the unspoilt mountain and forest regions of the Costa Blanca, such as the awe-inspiring landscape of the El Hondo Natural Park. Alternatively, you may prefer mountain biking, horse riding, or mountaineering, which are also available. Whether your idea of fun is a busy resort with every amenity available, or a secluded cove where you may not see another soul all day – the Costa Blanca can provide it!
There are plenty of attractions to entertain the family, many of them near Benidorm. Zoos like El Arca de Noe (Noah's Ark) and Mundomar (a zoo and seaworld combined) offer an exciting day out for everyone. The Costa Blanca also has several fabulous theme parks – Terra Mitica and Aqualandia being two of the most popular.
Shopping and Eating Out
Shopaholics rejoice! Shopping in the region is a wonderful experience, with a wide variety of roadside stalls, street markets, pretty town plazas, modern boutiques, supermarkets and department stores including the NEW La Zenia Boulevard . Whether you're after designer footwear, local arts and crafts or fresh regional produce you're bound to find a bargain, as prices are so much cheaper than the UK. Eating out is a pleasure, with plenty of choice between bars, cafes and restaurants offering a wide range of cuisines: English, German, Swedish, Chinese… and Spanish. Seafood naturally takes pride of place in the local cuisine, but also rice dishes, tapas and lots of fresh salads and vegetables.
Historic and Religious Sites of Interest
The Costa Blanca has had a volatile history, and the influences of the Carthaginians, Romans and Moors can still be seen in the art, culture and monuments throughout the region. Not only does almost every town boast a museum, you can also see prehistoric paintings; walled towns and fortified villages; temples and aqueducts from the Roman occupation; Romanesque churches; Moorish baths, mosques and fortresses; monasteries; and medieval cathedrals and castles. There is no shortage of things to do and see on the Costa Blanca for the culture enthusiast.
Local Attractions and Events
Every village and town in Spain has its own patron saint and these are celebrated annually with a festival or "Fiesta". These vibrant and lively spectacles take place throughout the year, but peak during the summer months. Highly recommended, it's worth contacting the local town hall or tourist information centre to confirm dates in your locality – don't miss out!
Whatever your interests: culture, sports, thrill-seeking, fine cuisine or just experiencing local Spanish life, you can be sure there'll never be a shortage of things to do on the Costa Blanca! Justifiably famed for its beaches and weather, the Costa Blanca has a lot more to offer than you might have realised.
