Casa Aire Libre is located in the Osa Peninsula, southwest Costa Rica where the rainforest meets the sea. It is one of the most remote, most spectacular and wildest regions in the country. One of the last places in Costa Rica to be settled, it has been dubbed Costa Rica's last wilderness frontier. Rich in wildlife, sparsely populated and until recently very difficult to access by road. Consequently much of the peninsula is still covered in majestic, pristine rainforest. Dominated by Corcovado National Park which protects most of the peninsula, the Osa supports more then fifty percent of the animal and plant species that live in Costa Rica. National Geographic has described the Osa as, "The most biologically intense place on earth".

Casa Aire Libre is two-story, open air rustic home truly one with nature, located in Dos Brazos de Rio Tigre in the forest reserve of the Corcovado National Park. A very private house, you will have the feeling to be in the middle of the jungle, yet the property manager is only a few minutes away. Tucked away on 30+ acres you will discover the wonders of the tropical rainforest, such as leaf cutter ants, the white-nosed coati and the explosive diversity of bird species; Toucans, Scarlet Macaws, Motmots and Trogons just to name a few. At night you will fall asleep to the sounds of howler monkeys in the distance and the Rio Tigre right outside your house.

The Province of Puntarenas region

Located in the province of Puntarenas the Osa Peninsula occupies much of the south pacific region of Costa Rica lowland rainforest, mountainous coastlines and isolated beaches. This is a rustic area, and the comforts of the city can be hard to find, but for those seeking a true nature adventure, the Osa Peninsula is a wonderland waiting to be explored. 80% of the Osa Peninsula is protected within the Corcovado National Park which offers travelers the opportunity to witness staggering amounts of wildlife, including tapirs, jaguars, macaws, toucans, Harpy eagles, squirrel monkeys and more.

Cabo Matapalo

Dos Brazos del Rio Tigre, The Last Frontier

In the seventies campesinos rode and hiked into the wilderness areas of the Osa. Many came with just a bag of beans, machete and a plan to clear forest and claim land. The reverse alchemy of turning stupendous forest into poor pasture was official government policy and a default solution for rural poverty alleviation. On the heels of settlers followed gold miners and by the mid-eighty's more then 2,000 gold miners had invaded Corcovado National Park. Poaching was rampant. Both the rainforest and wildlife were greatly affected. Fortunately the government eventually rose to the occasion and paid the miners to leave. Since then the park, although still subject to poaching, has healed nicely, and wildlife is once more abundant.

Within the Osa you will find Dos Brazos, a town with a rich history and an even more prosperous future. Not more than 30 years ago, gold, and lots of it, was Dos Brazos' claim to fame. Today Dos Brazos is a sleepy little village of just 175 inhabitants that lies in the richest location you can imagine, right at the border of the world famous Corcovado National Park. Although gold mining is still practiced, the real wealth of the area is the captivating biodiversity found in the last remaining lowland tropical rainforests of Central America.

It's a small oasis of civilization, surrounded by the jungle of the forest reserve that encompasses Corcovado. Although it's a short 12-kilometer ride from the beautiful Pacific beaches of Puerto Jimenez, and just a little further from great wave riding in Matapalo, it's a town that is barely known on the tourist circuit. From Dos Brazos you'll find extensive walking trails into the jungle, with many waterfalls to see, world class birding, horseback riding, gold mining tours, and more are all available. There are two small grocers, a bar, and a Soda (diner). So get off the beaten path, and make your way to Dos Brazos del Rio Tigre!

"Alive with attention to detail!"

Aire Libre is the last house on a dead-end road about 1km past the center of the small village of Dos Brazos. With an open house design without full walls, one doesn't need to even leave the hous… More
