The Algarve / East Algarve region

Cabanas is situated in the Ria Formosa, a protected nature reserve and it is a great location for cycling, fishing, swimming, walking and bird watching (bicycles and fishing equipment are available for hire in the village).

East of the village, towards the Spanish border, lie the popular resorts Manta Rota and Monte Gordo. Both offer plenty to see and do and have excellent beaches. West of Cabanas village is the well-known town, Tavira with its ancient architecture, riverside shops and restaurants. (Car hire is available in Cabanas village).

Cabanas is a small fishing village situated 5 kilometers from the larger town of Tavira. Central to the village is an amazing natural lagoon where you can take a short boat crossing to one of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve, where the golden sands seem to go on forever.

Cabanas village offers an excellent choice of restaurants, bars and typical Portuguese cafes, most of which run along the promenade and have fantastic lagoon and sea views.

Shopping facilities include two supermarkets, gift shops and a daily market where you can buy the best fresh produce.

Cabanas de Tavira / Quinta Da Gomeira area

Transport is easy, the Algarve has an excellent international airport in Faro with further transport links: car hire, taxi, train and bus to holiday destinations within Portugal. If you want more than a beach holiday, there are endless possibilities for sports such as horse riding, walking, diving, tennis, kite surfing and golf.

Home to the biggest protected area in Portugal, the Ria Formosa lagoon is an area of great natural beauty and is a paradise for wildlife. The formation of barrier islands that define the lagoon offer some of the most beautiful sandy white beaches along the coast.

The Algarve also has a valuable and long history and wherever you look you will see evidence of centuries of past inhabitants, from castles, fortresses to beautiful palaces. Inhabited since pre-historic times and settled by the Romans and the Greeks and conquered by the Moors. The Christian conquest of 1249 changed the face of the Algarve but everywhere, remains an Arab influence.

The coastline also offers several excellent marinas such as at Vilamoura, the biggest in the country, where all manner of water sports can be found. You will also find the gastronomy of the region among the best in Portugal with a wide selection of local dishes.
