The Algarve / East Algarve region
The Algarve is the Southern region of Portugal and with the remarkable beauty of its sea, rivers and mountain ranges is one of the best holiday destinations in the world. You have a choice of over 160km of stunning beaches with sandy islets that benefit from the warm African winds. The sun shines constantly for most of the year. Washed in the south and west by the Atlantic and protected in the north by the mountain ranges, the area benefits from a mild climate characteristic of the Mediterranean with average temperatures of 24ºC in the summer and 15ºC in the winter. Transport is easy, the Algarve has an excellent international airport in Faro with further transport links: car hire, taxi, train and bus to holiday destinations within Portugal. If you want more than a beach holiday, there are endless possibilities for sports such as horse riding, walking, diving, tennis, kite surfing and golf. The Algarve also has a valuable and long history and wherever you look you will see evidence of centuries of past inhabitants, from castles, fortresses to beautiful palaces. Inhabited since pre-historic times and settled by the Romans and the Greeks and conquered by the Moors. The Christian conquest of 1249 changed the face of the Algarve but everywhere, remains an Arab influence.
Cabanas de Tavira / Sitio Gomeira area
Cabanas is a small fishing village situated 5 kilometres from the larger town of Tavira. Central to the village is an amazing natural lagoon where you can take a short boat crossing to one of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve, where the golden sands seem to go on forever. Cabanas village offers an excellent choice of eating out; from some great restaurants serving fantastic local dishes, to the Portuguese bars and cafes, many of which run along the pretty promenade and have beautiful lagoon and sea views. In the evenings, you can enjoy the Portuguese calendar of social events; carnivals, festivals and arts and crafts. Cabanas is situated in the Ria Formosa, a protected nature reserve and it is a great location for cycling, fishing, swimming, walking and bird watching. East of the village, towards the Spanish border, lie the popular resorts Manta Rota and Monte Gordo. Both offer plenty to see and do and have excellent beaches. West of Cabanas village is the well-known town, Tavira with its ancient architecture, riverside shops and restaurants. Facilities include everything you would need for a good stay - supermarket, bank, post office, pharmacy, general shops and an excellent daily market where you can buy the best fresh local produce. Transport links are easy and excellent. There is a train station, good bus links and you can access car hire or bicycle hire from the village or just take a taxi. One ‘must have’ experience would be a visit to the waterfalls en route to Cachopo, North of Tavira, where surrounded by amazing scenery, you can swim in the emerald waters.
How to get there
Most major and budget airlines fly to Faro airport, Lisbon and Seville airports can also be used as there are exellent road links to the Algarve. Faro airport offers a good taxi link to Cabanas around 35 minutes drive, at a cost of 50-60 euros. Car hire can be arranged at the airport and there is also an exellent car hire company in Cabanas village.
