The Algarve region

The coastal towns of the eastern Algarve are 'real' towns, far more under-developed than those in the Central and Western area of the Algarve.

If you are after a more relaxed style of holiday, away from the hordes of tourists and water parks, then the Eastern Algarve may be the place for you.

Eastern Algarve Guide:

About 10 km north of Faro is the quiet and historic town of Estoi, famous for its pink palace and Roman Ruins. Carrying on a few kilometres into the hills, is the old cork capital, Sao Bras de Alportel.

Leaving Faro in an easterly direction along the N125, the first town you come to is the fishing port of Olhao . Well worth a visit, particularly for the large fish market down by the sea front. 8km northeast of Olhao is the rural village of Moncarapacho.

Leaving Olhao and continuing east along the N125 for about 23km, you'll see Tavira signposted. This is a charming and unspoiled town, with narrow cobbled streets, straddling both sides of the River Gilao. If you like churches, then you won't be disappointed as there are plenty to explore.

About 17km east from Tavira, is the Eastern Algarve's only real tourist resort, Monte Gordo. Being beyond the Ria Formosa reserve, it lies on the coast, with some beautiful beaches. You'll find more high rise apartments here than in other towns, and in the summer plenty of Spanish holiday makers (no doubt attracted by the cheaper prices here).

A few kilometres to the west of Monte Gordo, on the coast is the small purpose built resort of Altura, which is a peaceful and relaxing place to unwind, although you shouldn't expect much more from it than that.

Finally we come to Vila Real de Santo Antonio, on the Spanish border and the resort town of Monte Gordo. The Guadiana river here marks the border with Spain. If you want travel over to Spain, take the ferry over the river, but don't forget your passport. Click on the link to find out more about Vila Real de Santo Antonio.

Cabanas de Tavira

Cabanas is a former fishing village, about 5KM from the city of Tavira to the East side and only 15KMs from the Spanish border.

It holds a little more than 1000 permanent residents, and its beautiful and clean beaches turn it into a popular tourist destination in the summer. This area was established as such in 1997.

The village structure is composed by a long line of low-rise houses, shops, bars and restaurants lining a very pretty raised promenade stretching from one end of the sea fronted village to the other and facing the Ria Formosa Nature Park.

The coastline along this part of the eastern Algarve is calm and peaceful, with 11 KMs of extremely inviting fine white sandy beaches and very warm water. Dolphins will often visit the shallows in the warm summer months. The beach-lined coastal strip is part of the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve, offering pleasant boat trips and the chance to observe the typical wetland flora and fauna and wild life, most particularly the water birds.

Tavira Island along with Praia do Barril are stunningly attractive beaches but are just 2 of the more popular beaches in this region. There are truly many other wonderful beaches that are of equivalent beauty but are each different and unique in character but also less populated which are preferred by the local community.

Almost all the Algarve Golf Courses are within an hour of Tavira. Several of them feature on the list of the top European Championship Courses, indeed Golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and Severiano Ballesteros can be found just 15 minutes from Cabanas, in addition there is fantastic golf right on the doorstep, with Benamor Golf Club just a 5 minute walk away and Quinta da Ria & Quinta da Cima just a couple of KM's further. Benamor Course is an undulating one, although not excessively so, offering views over the mountains to one side and the sea to the other.

In addition to being a golfer's paradise, the area if perfect for fishing, sailing, cycling (readily hired locally) and walking.

"Lovely spacious house"

We had a lovely holiday in this house. We were six adults and three children. The house is beautifully appointed and equipped and more spacious than it appears in the photographs. Unfortunately, because we were so early in the season, the road train to the beach had not started so it was a bit of a trek. We liked the village of Conceicao and had some delicious fresh fish at the restaurant there. Having the train station so close was a real boon and it was easy for us to get out and about. In hindsight, we should have hired a car as, although the supermarket is nearby, it is a bit too far to walk with heavy shopping.I would happily use this house again, but with a car next time. Ana was extremely kind and helpful and the house was spotless.

"Excellent Family Holiday in Cabanas"

Nine (7 adults and 2 children) of us traveled to this 4 bedroom villa in Cabanas for 10 days in August 2013. The Villa was excellent, the photographs did not do it justice. The decor, space and facilities were top class making our stay thoroughly enjoyable. We especially loved the outdoor facilities; the pool, sun loungers, BBQ and outdoor seating area- they were in a lovely spacious setting.
The location was great just a 5 minute walk from the train station which meant we could travel into Tavira and the 20 minute walk / 5 min drive into (centro) Cabanas made the village very accessible. There was also supermarkets / pharmacy etc within a 5 minute walk. Cabanas itself was an amazing holiday location the beach, bars, restaurants and shops were great, the board walk and cobbled streets were lovely and the 2 min boat ride to the beach was a great novelty for the children.
We were fortunate enough to be there for part of the festival which had a great atmosphere- stalls, live music, fair rides etc. We would most definitely return to this excellent Villa

"Couldn't Ask For More!"

The property lived up to the photos and description. Adam the owner couldn't have been more accommodating fulfilling every request we had (high chair, cot etc.)
The high standard of the property made it very comfortable, homely and we wanted for nothing. We didn't feel like we had to tread on egg shells for fear of damaging the high quality furniture and fittings but were very appreciative of the high standard.
The outdoor pool and all the equipment supplied was second to none and the location was great. A 5 minute walk in one direction to a local supermarket, pharmacy, café and train station and the other direction there was a lovely restaurant and bar and a road train that took you to the local sea front of Cabanas for 1.50 Euros each or you could walk it in 15 mins.
We would highly recommend this villa as a great place to rent for a family, group of friends or couples.
We have recommended this for people with disabilities as while it is two story it does have flat level access from the street and there is a bedroom with en-suite shower, toilet and another toilet and shower. The only difficulty would be the slight step out of the sliding doors to the back pool area.
The lady that drops/collect the key is very nice and speaks very good English and will help with anything you need.

We spent a week at this supeerb villa. It is tastefully decorated with superb furnishings. The villa is extremely spacious with very comfortable bedrooms, some with balconies. The roof top terrace gave us a wonderful space to enjoy an evening drink watching the sun go down. We spent many hours in the lage swimming pool and sunbathing on the delightful terrace. A delightful patio area meant we could enjoy eveining bbq's in comfortable surroundings. There are several good restaurants close by and a good selection of bars. The villas great location meant that it was close to numerous golf couirses and many interesting towns and villages. It made a wonderful holiday home for a very realxing break.
