The Algarve region
The coastal towns of the eastern Algarve are 'real' towns, far more under-developed than those in the Central and Western area of the Algarve.
If you are after a more relaxed style of holiday, away from the hordes of tourists and water parks, then the Eastern Algarve may be the place for you.
Eastern Algarve Guide:
About 10 km north of Faro is the quiet and historic town of Estoi, famous for its pink palace and Roman Ruins. Carrying on a few kilometres into the hills, is the old cork capital, Sao Bras de Alportel.
Leaving Faro in an easterly direction along the N125, the first town you come to is the fishing port of Olhao . Well worth a visit, particularly for the large fish market down by the sea front. 8km northeast of Olhao is the rural village of Moncarapacho.
Leaving Olhao and continuing east along the N125 for about 23km, you'll see Tavira signposted. This is a charming and unspoiled town, with narrow cobbled streets, straddling both sides of the River Gilao. If you like churches, then you won't be disappointed as there are plenty to explore.
About 17km east from Tavira, is the Eastern Algarve's only real tourist resort, Monte Gordo. Being beyond the Ria Formosa reserve, it lies on the coast, with some beautiful beaches. You'll find more high rise apartments here than in other towns, and in the summer plenty of Spanish holiday makers (no doubt attracted by the cheaper prices here).
A few kilometres to the west of Monte Gordo, on the coast is the small purpose built resort of Altura, which is a peaceful and relaxing place to unwind, although you shouldn't expect much more from it than that.
Finally we come to Vila Real de Santo Antonio, on the Spanish border and the resort town of Monte Gordo. The Guadiana river here marks the border with Spain. If you want travel over to Spain, take the ferry over the river, but don't forget your passport. Click on the link to find out more about Vila Real de Santo Antonio.
Cabanas de Tavira
Cabanas is a former fishing village, about 5KM from the city of Tavira to the East side and only 15KMs from the Spanish border.
It holds a little more than 1000 permanent residents, and its beautiful and clean beaches turn it into a popular tourist destination in the summer. This area was established as such in 1997.
The village structure is composed by a long line of low-rise houses, shops, bars and restaurants lining a very pretty raised promenade stretching from one end of the sea fronted village to the other and facing the Ria Formosa Nature Park.
The coastline along this part of the eastern Algarve is calm and peaceful, with 11 KMs of extremely inviting fine white sandy beaches and very warm water. Dolphins will often visit the shallows in the warm summer months. The beach-lined coastal strip is part of the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve, offering pleasant boat trips and the chance to observe the typical wetland flora and fauna and wild life, most particularly the water birds.
Tavira Island along with Praia do Barril are stunningly attractive beaches but are just 2 of the more popular beaches in this region. There are truly many other wonderful beaches that are of equivalent beauty but are each different and unique in character but also less populated which are preferred by the local community.
Almost all the Algarve Golf Courses are within an hour of Tavira. Several of them feature on the list of the top European Championship Courses, indeed Golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and Severiano Ballesteros can be found just 15 minutes from Cabanas, in addition there is fantastic golf right on the doorstep, with Benamor Golf Club just a 5 minute walk away and Quinta da Ria & Quinta da Cima just a couple of KM's further. Benamor Course is an undulating one, although not excessively so, offering views over the mountains to one side and the sea to the other.
In addition to being a golfer's paradise, the area if perfect for fishing, sailing, cycling (readily hired locally) and walking.
