Enquire nowThe Algarve / East Algarve region
So what makes the Algarve such a great place? For the hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers from around the world that fly into Faro Airport or drive or sail from other parts of Europe each year, it's the promise of sun-drenched days at the beach, sharing in a lovely relaxed and welcoming family-orientated culture and endless options for dining out and things to do, for all ages. Algarve Holidays have long been thought of as great family holidays and beach holidays and the region has deservedly earned a reputation for golfing holidays too.
However the Algarve should also be known for it's truly unique contrast between the golden coastline and the beautiful rural countryside, it's many historic attractions and thousands of species of flora and fauna, making it the perfect holiday destination for interests such as photography, painting, nature watching, walking and other outdoor pursuits.
Tavira, on the Eastern Algarve is a really attractive town with some lovely, quite grand, buildings reflecting it's wealthy past particularly around the Praça da República area and then typical rows of portuguese 'town' houses with tiled fronts along narrow cobbled streets; shops to browse in; pretty gardens and squares to sit in and, of course, plenty of restaurants and cafes for refreshments!
If you enjoy shopping then don't miss the Gran-Plaza shopping mall - it has a fantastic selection of shops, places to eat and cinemas as well as a large Continente supermarket.
There are lots of delightful places to explore around Tavira starting with the pretty town of Cabanas just to the east. The view across the sheltered lagoon of the Ria Formosa to the ilha beach is idyllic and there is nothing more relaxing than sitting at one of the pavement cafes along the waterfront with a glass of chilled wine!
Cacela Velha - a beautiful little village not far from TaviraA short distance to the east of Cabanas is another picturesque spot - the tiny village of Cacela Velha. It is just a handful of typically Algarvean whitewashed houses, a church and a fort around a cobbled square and situated on the waterfront just before Manta Rota (it is signposted from the N125). There isn't a lot to do there it has to be said, but the village and the views are truly delightful. There are a couple of restaurants if you want to linger for a while - the one on the right just as you come into the village has an upstairs terrace giving great panoramic views across the beaches of Manta Rota and Monte Gordo to Vila Real all set against a backdrop of lush green countryside. About the only sounds 'disturbing' the total peace and quiet are from the birds and a few chickens!
The Cabanas de Tavira area
Cabanas de Tavira is a quaint fishing village full of charm and atmosphere. It has a variety of shops, bars and restaurants to suit all tastes and ages. The supermarket at the end of the road is well stocked and efficiently run by friendly staff. There is a fruit and veg as well as a fresh fish market on the main esplanade. The Continente Plaza shopping mall lies between Cabanas and Tavira, less than a 10 minute drive away, offering a very large supermarket, other individual shops, eateries and cinema.
There are stunning beaches along this eastern section of the Algarve and the nearest beach is accessed by hopping on a water taxi from the centre of Cabanas.
Venture slightly inland to find secret waterfalls with lagoons to swim in, or wander around historic towns like Tavira and Villa Real San Antonio, the Spanish border town. The journey to Spain by car is only 30 minutes, with Seville being just a two hour drive away. Golf courses are never far away, in fact there are 3 very good courses within a 10 minutes drive from the apartment. Excursions can be arranged locally and you can hire bikes and arrange horse riding in the village
You can choose to eat out at the numerous restaurants in Cabanas, close by in the beautiful Roman Town of Tavira or the neighbouring hamlet of Cacela.

The apartment, on the 2nd floor, was immaculate throughout. Decorated and fitted out in high quality. It has everything you need for a family holiday. It would be very easy to live here. The private rooftop area is great for sunsets and sunbathing, with the added bonus of a BBQ. Excellent and quiet pool area, with plenty of shade when it gets too hot. The block has an underground car park, but we parked in the spaces right outside he main front door. Location : 200m from a decent sized supermarket. The boardwalk and village with all the bars and restaurants are a 10 minute stroll. The train station is also a 10 minute walk away if you fancy going to Faro or Tavira. Along the boardwalk are the jettys for the little boats to take you to the beach. Its a fun way to get to the beach and the kids will love it. €1.50 return trip. Dont come to Cabanas if you want streets full of neon lights, karaoke bars, bingo and all night disco joints. Its a classy and relaxing place to come and for us its perfect. |
