The Algarve / East Algarve region
With its stunning coastline, excellent golf courses and pleasant year round climate, the Algarve's 200 kilometre stretch of southern shoreline has become one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations. Bordered on two sides by the Atlantic Ocean, the Algarve is divided from the rest of Portugal by a series of low lying mountains. In the east, the Guadiana River forms a scenic border with neighbouring Spain.
There is a clear definition between the Western Algarve and the East. Whilst the West shows more development towards tourism, the Eastern Algarve and its tidal marshlands still have a tranquil beauty, and the small resorts along the coast have retained much of their character, looking today as they must have looked long ago. Here, tourism blends in perfectly with local activities creating a relaxed way of life. There is a tinge of excitement and even romance about the ferry boat trips to the beach islands, where visitors are rewarded with superb, less crowded bathing beaches and warm waters.
The sea water temperature is around 14c in January and reaches a high 22c in August. A pleasant sea breeze refreshes the temperatures of the region, which are around 15c in January and up to 28c or more in July and August. The Algarve can also count on around 3.000 hours of Sun during the year which makes it a favourite destination for those who fancy such a sunny climate. The autumn and winter months are mild, but you will need a jacket in the evening and some kind of heating in your apartment or hotel room. January is the coolest month of the year.
Cabanas de Tavira area
The Algarve is famous for its wonderful sandy shores and Cabanas beach Island is no exception! Separated by an arm of the River Formosa the sands are golden and clean offering a good standards for bathing and sun worshipping. There is a small range of amenities including snack bars and sunbeds and shades for hire. The Island is reached by a small and inexpensive boat from a designated point on the sea front. Speed boat water taxis are also available providing a fun and exciting way to travel to nearby beaches - of which Tavira Island can be highly recommended for a Tropical Holiday adventure! Cabanas is a small and pretty fishing village and is not overcrowded with tourists. It remains largely unspoilt and has a friendly, family atmosphere. The whole village can be leisurely strolled, from end to end, in around 30 minutes and has an excellent choice of restaurants, bars and cafes catering for all tastes - most of which are along the sea front capturing the day time sunshine. For smaller budgets and a taste of the real Algarve, there are also a number of traditional bars and Tascas serving typical Portuguese meals in the back streets at very reasonable prices! The village has 2 good supermarkets with a range of fresh produce and there is also a daily market, butchers and bakers. There are relatively few gifts shops, but in the height of summer, there are stalls selling hand crafted goods. Cabanas is not a destination for those seeking activity and night life - the atmosphere is generally relaxed and is perfect for socialising, relaxing and dining. Good bus/rail links.
How to get there
It is becoming increasingly easy to travel to the Algarve where the main airport is Faro. The most favoured budget airlines are Easyjet, Thomsonfly, Jet2.com, Bmi Baby, Ryan Air, Aer Lingus and Monarch. The best website that we can recommend is www.skyscanner.net where you can select your chosen dates and preferred departure airport and you are presented with a 1 simple list of all available flights, the operator names and the prices! Further details indoors: The internal layout is mostly open plan and on 1 level. From the main entrance, the bathroom - newly refurbished - is modern and bright. This leads to a kitchen and dining area, well equipped with all major appliances and a good range of utensils. The dining table and seating area is suitable for up to 4 persons. This leads to a cosy lounge (2 steps) which is cosy, with 2 comfortable sofas and BBC Freeview Channels. There is also a DVD player. The 2 bedrooms are both twin with wardrobes. Overall the internal furnishings are comfortable and practical offering a good standard of self catering accommodation.
Further details outdoors: Car parking is on-street just out side the house. The path to the house leads to a securely gated terrace area, which is large and spacious and with plenyy of room to sunbathe. The pool is a good size and regularly maintained, and has a poolside shower room which also houses the washing machine. For peaceful relaxation, a canopy offers shade for those who just wish to read and take time out of the sun. A table and chairs are also provided making this the perfect place to dine 'al-fresco' from the traditional brick BBQ just alongside. Idyllic!
