The South East Brazil / Rio de Janeiro region
Southeast Brazil is the cultural and economic hub of the country, and contains three of the four largest cities: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Belo Horizonte.
Climate
The diverse landscapes of the southeast can have very different climates altogether. As a general rule, areas along the coastline can be hot and humid year-round – less so in winter. Northern Minas Gerais is also hot, but drier. In higher altitude areas (such as São Paulo (city), southern Minas Gerais and the mountains of Rio state) winters are usually cool. Summer is the wettest season whereas winters are generally drier.
English is normally spoken only at the tourism businesses (hotels and a few more tourist-oriented restaurants), and by the well-educated upper classes. Do not assume everyone speaks Spanish. Brazilians do not like to be mistaken for Spanish-speakers and some can find it rude to be approached in Spanish. Portuguese is spoken with variations in accent and a few tweaks in vocabulary.
Buzios area
Just 105 miles from Rio de Janeiro, a pleasant 2-hour trip takes you to the peninsula of Búzios, whose more than 20 magnificent beaches and crystal-clear water contrast with the exuberantly sculptured landscape and exotic vegetation, which a prodigal "Mother Nature" has privileged with a wonderful year-round summer.
Originally settled by European pirates and slave traders, this happy mixture of many bloods prospered and became a picturesque fishing village, elected one of the 10 most beautiful areas in the world, famous for its unique combination of rustic charm, architectural harmony, incredible beauty and sophisticated boutiques and restaurants frequented by discerning visitors who come from all over the world to savour its magic.
Sophisticated restaurants for those who appreciate good food. International cuisine offerings include Japanese, French, Italian, Moroccan, Thai and many other.
More than 20 spectacular beaches surround the peninsula.
Windsurfing, scuba diving, snorkelling, fishing and many other water sports.
International 18 hole golf course and show jumping club.
Boat, car and beach-buggy rentals. Boat tours around the islands and beaches of Búzios.
A very exciting night life with live music shows, night-clubs, pancake parlors, bars of all kinds and the fascinating Rua das Pedras (Street of Stones), in downtown Búzios.
Local and international boutiques along with art galleries selling conventional art plus local craftsmanship.
How to get there
By plane
São Paulo has the country's largest number of international links. Note that some connections to domestic flights may require a change between airports, from Guarulhos International (GRU) to Congonhas (CGH), which is a busy national hub.
Rio de Janeiro (GIG) also receives international flights. Rio's other airport (SDU) serves only domestic destinations.
Other cities with international connections are Belo Horizonte (from Portugal) and Cabo Frio, in the Buzios region, with flights to and from Buenos Aires.
