The Heart of England / Peak District / Peak District/Derbyshire region
Buxton is situated one thousand feet above sea level, and yet surrounded by hills, it has enjoyed a reputation for more than two centuries as 'the Bath of the North'.
A splendid concoction of magnificent architecture, fine hotels, more than twenty acres of beautiful landscaped gardens, excellent modern facilities for shopping and eating out, and the internationally renowned Buxton Opera House, Buxton offers a great deal for visitors of all ages and interests.
The famous waters of Buxton's warm springs are, historically and physically at the centre of the town's development. The Romans, who called the place Aquae Arnementiae, were the first to take the plunge and through the centuries many thousands of visitors have travelled to the spa town in the hills to sample the supposedly health giving waters.
The Buxton area
The Old Stables is just minutes away from the Pavillion Gardens, The Opera House, restaurants, pubs, quaint gift and antique shops, cafés and good High Street shopping.
Buxton, a georgian spa town, is close to Roaches Rocks for climbing, Dovedale for walking, underground caves like the Blue John Mines for exploring. You can walk right from The Old Stables to Pool's Cavern and through beautiful woodland to Solomon's Temple for great scenic views of the area. Alton Towers is only 3/4 hours drive away and Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are great days out.

We were a group of five friends on a mountain biking long weekend, looking for somewhere to base our travels from. We found this property through TripAdvisor, and the owner was really helpful... more |

Excellent house, comfortable and different. Well appointed kitchen/dining room/lounge so we could all be together. Just right for 10 of us and the bedrooms were very comfortable. Central location meant we could walk into Buxton to the shops and also the pavillion gardens. Will certainly come again. The bottle of wine for our arrival was a lovely touch! Also took two dogs and was very easy with them. |

Clean, comfy, well equipped, ideal location for pubs, shops, eating out and drive outs. Parking a bit tight, we managed a small car in the garage and two others outside. We intend to re-visit. |
