Yurt | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 6
Welcome to Chez Yurt – luxury yurt camping in the beautiful Limousin region of France. If you love the romance and adventure of camping but also enjoy the comforts of home (proper beds, fresh linen, hot showers, a flushing loo!), then a stay at Chez Yurt could be the answer. We have something to suit everyone’s needs, from honeymooning couples to large families. Our take on glamorous camping, or ‘glamping’, offers peace and privacy as well as the opportunity to enjoy the various attractions on-site and throughout the region.
Chez Yurt is situated in a small hamlet in the Haute-Vienne department of the Limousin in South-West France. Our Mongolian yurt (or ‘ger’ as it is more accurately known) enjoys views over the Gartempe Valley and across to the Monts de Blond in the distance. Our local village, about 4 miles away, offers a range of shops and facilities including a boulangerie, bank, pharmacy and restaurant, and the nearest supermarkets are within 10 miles. We are about halfway between the historic cities of Poitiers and Limoges – the former is the picturesque capital of the Vienne noted in particular for its Romanesque architecture, and the latter the bustling capital of the Limousin famed for its porcelain industry.
Here are some comments from our Guest Book:
‘We were blown away by what we found! A little oasis of peace and tranquillity. The yurt is beautiful and comfortable. We liked it so much we stayed an extra two nights. Chez Yurt has something for everyone, a relaxing romantic break or a family adventure. It’s just waiting to be explored. We will be back for sure.’ Orla and Kevin [Limerick]
‘Many thanks for a wonderful welcome after a long drive. We heartily recommend Cathy’s cooking which was just excellent. All in all, a great place to come: beautiful, peaceful, but with plenty to do – even for teenagers! The Limousin remains an unspoilt region with a plentiful choice of activities for young and more mature families. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it’ Phoebe, Stephen, Edward and Gilles [Switzerland]
‘A fab welcome, a fantastic getaway for couples and families, our boys loved it! The pool, the chickens/egg collecting, the yurt, the ‘biggest garden bug in the whole wide world’, the Jenga, the trampoline……. Cathy, Jules and Dylan made the perfect hosts. We thank you and wish you ongoing success.’ James, Penny, Dillon and Fynn [Dorset]
‘We have had a wonderful week at Chez Yurt. All the facilities are perfect. The children loved, loved, loved the trampoline. The kitchen is stocked with all you need but Cathy’s food is delicious and a welcome treat – it is a must as is a visit to the lake. Thank you for your great hospitality and knowledge of places to visit.’ Becky, Matthew, Ruby and Jude [Notttingham]
‘It’s been wonderful to enjoy Cathy, Julian and Dylan’s little ‘coin de paradis’ this past week. We’re officially addicted to yurts (especially the kitchen and bathroom facilities!). We highly recommend a meal with the hosts – delicious food and great company. The girls loved playing with Dylan, the swimming pool, the trampoline, the games barn, everything! A huge thanks for your warm welcome, we had a great time.’ Rob, Patricia, Rebecca and Lilly [Oxfordshire]
‘Our first time in a yurt and what a wonderful experience this proved to be. The welcome was wonderful, the facilities exceptional and the hosts (plus Dylan) couldn’t be better. We spent a wonderful week here, exploring, cycling, going to the lac. We will be back next year! We wish you every success in your French life.’ Martyn, Vicky, Katie and Harry [West Yorkshire]

The Limousin/Auvergne region
There are plenty of delights to explore across the region, whether you enjoy great food, history, culture, wildlife, sports or adventure. We have included some selected highlights below, but would be happy to help tailor your itinerary to your particular interests.
Futuroscope, to the east of Poitiers, is a huge theme park with rides, shows and attractions for all ages. With an emphasis on discovering the world through interactive rides and adventures, it features 3D and 4D cinemas, laser shows and a 360° observatory.
If you have any interest in wildlife then a visit to La Vallée des Singes (Valley of the Monkeys) is a must. Fifteen hectares of natural territory provide home for over 350 primates - including bonobos, chimps, gorillas and lemurs. Likewise, La Planète des Crocodiles and L'île aux Serpents provide fascinating excursions for animal lovers all within easy reach of Chez Yurt.
A visit to the 'martyred village' of Oradour-sur-Glane is a fascinating and moving experience. The village was destroyed on June 10 1944, when 642 of its inhabitants were massacred by a German Waffen-SS company. Only two women and one child survived. The village has been preserved as a memorial, alongside a museum and visitor's centre.
We spend a lot of our time at Le Lac de Saint Pardoux, a picturesque swimming lake about 45 minutes drive from us. There is plenty to occupy children and adults alike, with well-equipped play areas, sailing, water-sports, fishing, horse-riding, restaurants, bouncy castles – even hot-air ballooning and a forest adventure park.
The local area boasts many markets, brocantes (antiques markets) and vide greniers (car boot sales). The nearby town of Le Dorat hosts regular night markets during the summer months, and Limoges holds a famous flea market on the second Sunday of each month. The Haute-Vienne is also a haven for walkers, cyclists and those with a taste for the more adventurous e.g canoeing, kayaking, bungee-jumping.
