The Dordogne region
The Perigord Vert region of the Dordogne is famous for its lakes and forests, street markets and historical sites.
There is something for everyone within easy reach of Chez John. Cycling, walking, horseriding, sailing, fishing, canoeing, Go Karting etc.
Pack up a picnic basket and take off to one of the many leisure lakes or get off the beaten track and explore the beautiful surroundings. For lazy days, there are numerous pavement and riverside bars and restaurants where you can unwind and simply watch the world go by!
The large town of Nontron, famous for cutlery and knives since the fifteenth century, is an easy 20 minute drive and Limoges, famous for porcelain is approximately 45 minutes drive.
The beautiful town of Brantome, steeped in history and known as France's Little Venice, is also just 45 minutes away. Explore the shops set into overhanging cliffs and meander along the little cobbled streets. Take a break in one of the many bars and restaurants overlooking the river, or a boat trip which is like travelling back in time away from the bustle of modern life.
Chez John nestles in the rural tranquil hamlet of La Tremoulie just outside the traditional village of Champniers et Reilhac, surrounded by beautiful countryside, yet within easy reach of lively market towns.
Champniers Reilhac is a 15 - 20 minute stroll from Chez John (2 minutes by car) along quiet country lanes and boasts a friendly bistro bar, a post office and a tennis court.
During the July and August, the viillage takes turns with the nearby town of St Mathieu to host weekly barbecues with live music and dancing!
Driving in the area is a forgotten pleasure as there is little traffic. St Matthieu is less than 10 minutes by car and has a choice of restaurants, bars and a large supermarket. It also has a large leisure lake and sandy beach, surrounded by beautiful countryside, with swimming, boating, fishing and mini golf.
The large lake at St Estephe is only 15 minutes by car and has similar facilities together with an excellent restaurant, children's playground and free canoeing!
Piegut Pluviers (also 10 minutes drive) is the home of the largest weekly street market in South West France.
