The County Antrim region

The North Coast is a landscape of spectacular countryside and coastlines. The bustling towns of Coleraine, Londonderry and Ballymena are all a short drive away. County Antrim is the gateway to the coastal resorts of Portrush, Portstewart, Portballintrae and Castlerock.

These towns are well served with beautiful sandy beaches. History and heritage are attached to the towns and villages within this region. The historic Dunluce Castle at Portrush and the 18th Century Mussenden Temple at Downhill. The North Coast offers some wonderful outdoor activities. Golfers can enjoy their game at any one of ten courses, while sea angling , surfing, kayaking and a host of water sports are also available.

For those seeking relaxation there is a wealth of arts, crafts, antiques, good food and some of the most breath-taking scenery in Ireland. Sports centres and adventure playgrounds will ensure a warm welcome for visitors of all ages.

Bushmills

Bushmills is a village on the north coast of County Antrim. The village owes its name to the River Bush and a large watermill built in the early 17th Century. The diamond area is typical of many old traditional Ulster towns and villages where the corners are gathering places for the exchange of news and banter and still happens today. The best known attraction is the Old Bushmills distillery which was founded in 1608.

The distillery gives guided tours which is well worth a visit. From bushmills you can take a steam train to the famous Giants causeway. This is an area of about 40,000 interlocking bassalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption. The causeway is today owned and managed by the National Trust.

Bushmills has many good restaurants and pubs serving good local produce.

Carrick-a Rede rope bridge is a short journey from Bushmills. Its construction once consisted of a single rope hand rail and widely spaced slats which fishermen would walk across with their salmon caught from the island. The bridge has now been made more secure and replaced by a two handed railed bridge so that tourist will feel safe crossing!!!

Ballymoney is only a short distance away and has a good leisure facility know as Joey Dunlops centre. Within the town of Portrush there are a selection of indoor venues which include Waterworld. The Dunluce centre and Barrys amusements and a large choice of restaurants and cafes and bars. Beautiful beaches surround you with the Royal Portrush Golf course midway along the beach.

So you see an abundance of things to suit all ages.Come and discover this wonderful county and take home some special memories that will last a life time.

"GREAT"

We are only back from our one week stay at Gwendoline's Retreat
The cottage is very clean, spacious and well equipped
It is a perfect base for visiting the Causeway coast and other North coast attractions. Gwen and her Family are very helpful and kind her Mum left us a
carton of milk and a loaf of bread. We really enjoyed our stay at the cottage
a family party of 5 adults and 2 children we also got great weather
We hope to return.

"A Lovely Tranquil Retreat"

We stayed for a week in this beautiful cottage and got to enjoy the causeway coast and the numerous tourist attractions it offers such as: the giants causeway, bushmills distillery, white park bay, carrick-a-rede and many more.
Surrounded by beautiful countryside but not too far away from local amenities and towns to visit giving you the best of both worlds. We were lucky enough to visit the close town of Portrush at the time Darren Clarke won the British Open and join in the town's celebrations.
Would love to visit again and would highly recommend to anyone planning to visit this special part of Ireland.

"A well equipped and deceptively large cottage in a quiet location"

We stayed at Gwendoline's retreat for a week in June 2011. The weather was 'variable' as can be expected in this part of the UK (its very green in Ireland for a very good reason!) but t… More
