The East Anglia / Suffolk region

East Anglia, is famous for its thatched cottages, wide skies, and unspoilt coastlines. Many areas, unchanged for centuries, provide a unique appeal to those seeking peace and quiet, and an 'away from it all' holiday. Oxburgh Hall, Framlingham Castle, (English Heritage) and Long Melford Hall (National Trust) are just some of the historic houses open to the public.
Constable Country, the Norfolk Broads and Thetford Forest more than satisfy the thirst for natural landscapes, and for garden lovers, there Is Beth Chatto's Garden, Otley Hall, and Cambridge Botanic Gardens to name a few. For shopping, Cambridge and Norwich are regional centres with the usual big names and local specialists too.
For naturalists, Suffolk Wildlife Trust has nearby sites at Ixworth, Lackford and Redgrave, and Minsmere (RSPB) on the coast is internationally important. East Anglia traditionally is both the sunniest and driest part of England.
The Bury St Edmunds / Stanton area
Within a 30 minute drive of Stanton you will find Wyken Hall Vineyard, Ickworth House and gardens, Bressingham Gardens and Steam Museum, the Greene King Brewery (with tours), Wattisfield Potteries and Euston Hall.
For the more active, Thetford Forest offers miles of off-road walking and cycling (cycle hire available), the Norfolk Broads offer endless boating (day hire available), and there is horse riding not far away. There is a good choice of local golf courses with "pay and play" available. Newmarket races gives an exciting day out, where the National Horseracing museum can also be found. At the National Air Museum at Duxford there are also regular display days.
The charming market town of Bury St. Edmunds has an annual Arts Festival every May and a varied programme at the delightful Theatre Royal. The very popular Christmas Market with over 100 stalls, takes place over the last weekend of November (check St.Edmundsbury website www.burystedmundstourism.co.uk for details). For a real insight into the local history, then you can do no better than visit the Museum of East Anglian Life at Stowmarket.
