The Algarve region
The Western Algarve is a fantastic place for a relaxed family holiday. It 's authentic, uncrowded and genuinely unspolit by mass tourism. You drive around in the summer and it still feels like a undiscovered secret spot. If you want to explore you there is plenty to see and do. If you want to take it easy, just hop around the local beaches and restaurants. It never gets too busy in high season and there is a genuine fishing village feel to Burgau and Salema down the coast.
The weather is as you'd expect in the summer without the suffocating evening temparatures. Do consider outside July and August as the weather is stunning (and its cheaper).
With over 300 days of sunshine a year, the Western Algarve is one of the few areas of southern Europe which can truly claim to have a year round climate, similar to California. My family have enjoyed holidays in Salema during every month of the year. Even in December and January the average daily temperature is 16 degrees Celsius.
Summer. During the height of summer, the cooling Atlantic breezes make the outdoors pleasant and bearable (further East in the Algarve and over the border in Spain it can get too hot). The breeze also keeps insects and mosquitoes at bay, and provides the perfect complement to the scorching temperatures. The apartment benefits from air conditioning throughout to combat the occasional stifling day.
Autumn. The days are shorter, but remain sunny and warm. We love the spectacular colour changes and pleasant strolls on seemingly endless deserted beaches. From early November the nights draw in, the evenings become cooler and the first rain showers bring welcome relief after the long summer. November through to March is a lovely time to enjoy activities requiring a pleasant temperature, such as playing golf, walking, and painting.
Winter. Generally you will experience sunny days, often without wind. Temperatures are similar to a spring day in the UK. Occasionally there may be a little rain, but it rarely lasts for too long. The evenings are cooler and you may need the villa heating on. This is a great time to visit if you enjoy peace and tranquillity. With the Algarve's pleasant winter climate and relaxed pace of life, a break in southern Portugal is the ideal escape from the doldrums of a British winter.
Spring. We particularly enjoy the Algarve spring, which lasts from February to April. The land is lush and green with increasingly longer, sunny days. The whole area is a ‘sea of colour’, with a profusion of beautiful flowers and plants everywhere. This is probably our favourite time of the year.
Moving west from Lagos along the south coast towards Salema and onwards to Sagres you will discover the following beaches:
Meia Praia is easily the biggest beach in Lagos, curving around the bay all the way from the marina to the river estuary at Alvor.
Batata is only a few steps away from Lagos old town centre, located by the little fort at the entrance to the harbour.
Dona Ana and Ponta Piedada are probably the most photographed beaches on the Algarve. This is a fantastically shaped headland and an area of great natural beauty. Here the sea has formed hidden lagoons, grottos and sheltered beaches. You can take a boat ride to them from Lagos, kayak or walk along the cliff top.
Praia da Luz is a popular family holiday resort with a lovely beach.
Burgau and Salema are typical Portuguese fishing villages with beautiful beaches.
Zavial is a great beach and a surfer’s paradise.
Ingrina is a quiet little cove much used by scuba divers and snorkellers.
Martinhal is a large beach next to Sagres, very popular with windsurfers.
From Cape St Vincent up to Alzejur are the vast, rugged beaches of the west coast waiting to be discovered:
Praia do Castelejo and Cordama beaches, the closest to Salema, are very popular with surfers.
Carrapateira is a big, sparsely populated wild beach with cliffs and sand dunes.
Amado is a favourite beach of the local surf schools with its long shallow waves for beginners and bodyboarders.
Arrifano is one of the few west coast beaches next to a village.
Amoreira is a huge, beautiful beach with a river estuary at the end of it.
Monte Clerigo and Odeceixe are right up in the northwest of the Algarve. Both have lovely beaches with rock pools at either end for children to explore.
The beach at Burgau is a beautiful sandy crescent (similar to Cornish beaches) and has shade and a few loungers for hire. It's a short walk along into Burgau and down the hill to the beach. The Burgau beach bar is very popular for food in the evenings (you need to book). There are numerous other secluded beaches within easy driving distance, notably Salema.
There are some terrific restaurants in Burgau and Salema. We try to eat by the beach so the kids can run about and let me finish my wine in peace. There is a brilliant pizza house a few doors down from the apartment in a converted old barn/house. Book for the weekend as it is very busy.
There are two world class golf courses within 10 minutes drive - Parque de Floresta and Boa Vista. There are also several other courses within a 25 minute drive.
Only a 15-minute drive to the east from Burgau lies the historic port of Lagos. Its ancient maze of cobbled streets bustles with pavement restaurants, street entertainers, cafés, bars, shops and stylish boutiques.
With a seafaring tradition dating back to the 15th century, Lagos was the base of Henry the Navigator before he set out on his voyages of discovery. The ancient walls are steeped with history, yet Lagos is also a vibrant town full of life. Tradition co-exists happily with the elegant new marina, positioned between the old town and one of the longest beaches on the Algarve, Meia Praia.
Anybody that likes to explore can really enjoy Burgau as their base to travel to the west coast (beautiful beaches/surfing). Monchique (mountains/ spa). Sagres (the end of the world/great sunsets). For nature-lovers, a dolphin watching trip from Lagos is good value.
Zoomarine is located in the heart of the Algarve, about 40 minutes from Burgau, and offers a fantastic day out. With a philosophy of environmental conservation and education, the Zoomarine is one of the best in the world for dolphin interaction, sea lions, birds of prey, swimming pools and entertainment for all the family.
Slide and Splash
Situated near Lagoa about half an hour from Burgau is the Slide and Splash water park. It is one of the biggest water parks in Europe and has an amazing number of pools and slides ranging from very gentle to the heart stopping Kamikaze.
Surfing and Body Boarding
Some of Europe’s best surf beaches can be found on the Algarve’s west coast, just a 20-minute drive from Burgau. The wind is usually off shore and the big rollers cascade in from the open Atlantic on most days of the year. There are a number of specialist surf schools in the Lagos and Sagres area offering different courses in both surfing and bodyboarding, depending on experience.
Dolphin watching is very popular in Lagos. This is a wonderful opportunity to see the dolphins in their natural environment.
There are many holiday activities available on the Western Algarve and the area offers something for everyone at anytime of the year. All of the following activity locations are within close proximity to Burgau. Canoeing, kayaking, diving, snorkelling, kitesurfing, windsurfing, sailing, big game fishing are all available locally.
Golf and Spas
The prestigious Algarve golf and holiday resort of Parque da Floresta and the luxury Spa Floresta are only a 5-minute drive from Salema. All facilities are available to non-residents.
Famous for its golf course, the resort also boasts a wide range of other opportunities. These include a luxury spa, tennis courts, bowling greens, large communal pool and excellent restaurants.
It is easy to spend at least a day of your holiday here. Perhaps play a round of golf on the magnificent 18-hole course; work out or wind down at Spa Floresta, with its state-of-the-art fitness facilities and latest beauty therapies, or just relax by the magnificent pool. There is an excellent children’s club catering for young children as well as teenagers, for whom there is tennis, football and other sports coaching sessions. Whilst the children are busy why not play a round of golf or spend an hour or two at the Spa?
If you enjoy being pampered visit Spa Floresta. Facilities include a fully equipped gym, spa, steam room, sauna, beauty treatments and alternative therapies.

"Great location, apartment very well equipped, great family accomodation"
The apartment was very central to Burgau and a very short drive to some lovely surrounding beaches. It was a lovely touch to find a bottle of wine and 2 glasses waiting for us upon arrival - always nice when to enjoy whilst unpacking. We stayed for 2 and a half weeks so I took some cleaning items with me but there was no need as the apartment was very well stocked with everything. The pool was really clean and hardly used much to the enjoyment of my Son. Would highly recommend a stay here.

"Fantastic apartment, beautiful location, lovely family holiday"
This was our second visit to Burgau staying in the same apartment. The apartment was spotless, near the beach and close to some great restaurants. We have a 2 year old and a 4 year old and free use of buggy, high chair and travel cot really helped make it a hassle free holiday. We had the shared pool almost to ourselves. The beaches at Burgau and down the coast at Salema are magical and great for kids. We loved it!
I didn't recognise the issues mentioned in the earlier review. The whole apartment was spotlessly clean. Clearly the owners have taken note of the feedback.
