What an amazing cottage!

Located in the stunning (and famous) village of Swinbrook, just outside Burford, Hillside is a stunning 5 star cottage that offers the very best in self catering accommodation. Having undergone a huge renovation this cottage has appeared in a many a Home Magazine feature particularly for its amazing kitchen. Overall we think it is one of the finest cottages in the Burford region, possibly the Cotswolds. Originally one of the oldest cottages in this historic village and with a view towards the church, your are surrounded by classic Cotswolds' scenery - a truly quintessential spot. Inside there are spacious rooms on the ground floor while upstairs there are four large bedroom bedrooms and three uder-cool bathrooms every bit of it very stylish and gorgeous. When we (Manor Cottages) inspected this cottage we were bowled - we think you will be too! What's more, we manage it so we know it's in excellent order!

The Central England/Cotswolds region

Welcome to the Manor Cottages Holiday Guide. We are privileged to cover some of England's finest countryside and locations and with so much to do while here, we wanted to take the opportunity to give you some basic information about the region and also some tips on what to do. Naturally there is much, much more to see and enjoy than we could possibly fit in here, but hopefully this will give you a flavour!

For us a Cotswolds holiday cottage is about as traditional a cottage holiday as one could imagine or wish for. Although we are biased (as you'd expect) the honey coloured Cotswolds' cottages, the drystone walls, the rolling countryside, local pubs and inns and friendly locals together make the region one of the most idyllic in both the United Kingdom but also the world! Taking a Cotswolds holiday with Manor Cottages is likely to include the opportunity to visit famous cities such as Bath or Oxford along with many attractive towns like Cheltenham or Stratford upon Avon. And of course there are literally hundreds of picturesque villages from places like Burford, to Bibury to Castle Combe and Chipping Campden. Don't just take our word for it, look at our cottages and see for yourself, we really do have a cottage for everyone!

The 'Drystone walls' are a particular feature of the Cotswolds, scattered everywhere in the fields of the region. it is believed that many of these were built in the 18th and 19th centuries, a matter of considerable skill as there is no cement to hold the walls together. They represent an important historical landscape and a major conservation feature – and are of course still used by farmers to enclose sheep and cattle.During the 13-15th centuries, the medieval period, the native Cotswold sheep were famous throughout Europe for their heavy fleeces and high quality of wool. Cotswold wool commanded a high price and the wealth generated by the wool trade enabled wealthy traders to leave their mark by building fine houses and wonderful churches, known as “wool churches”. Even today, the sight of sheep on the hillside is still one of the classic Cotswold images.

From our perspective, we are fortunate enough to have visited most villages across the Cotswolds. However, not all are well known, and today many still hold their secrets - examples such Naunton, Combe, or Winson are stunning but off the beaten track. Even the likes of Painswick, Biddestone or Winchcombe are have fabulous treats for those prepared to make more of their Cotswolds holiday. As we always say, if you're not sure ask the team where to go, we know this stunning region very well and believe that if you come once, you'll return and find something new each time! Well, we would say that wouldn't we!!

Burford

Swinbrook is very much the quintessential Cotswold village: very pretty, very traditional and classic in terms of a Cotswolds location. It has a long history, but is perhaps best known for its links with the Mitford sisters in the mid 20th Century. Above all it has remained almost completely untouched over the years. The village sits on the River Windrush and is about a 30 minute walk from the historic Cotswold town of Burford regarded by Forbes magazine as the 5th Best Place to Live in the world!!! There are a plethoral of attractive buildings throughout the village and if you do decide to walk along the lanes you will understand why so many people fall in love with it.

Swinbrook is perhaps best known for its association with the Mitford sisters who lived here in the 1930's and beyond. Today the village has an excellent pub called The Swan which sits on the Windrush and serves high quality food. As if to complete the classic Cotswolds village scene there is a cricket pitch too! There are countless attractions within easy reach, including a host of National Trust Houses and Gardens (Kelmscote Manor and Hidcote Manor Gardens for example). Oxford is no more than 20 mins in the car, while Cheltenham, Bath and Stratford upon Avon are easily accessible. A very, very good location and choice for your holiday!
