Staying here at the Hamlet of Castelrotto, which means the broken castle, will make you fall in love with the rolling hills of Tuscany and the medieval hilltop towns, the festivals and cultural highlights that this marvelous "undiscovered" region, known as the Val D'Orcia, has to offer. Access to the house is along a gravel country road that winds through the vineyards that lead you to the Hamlet. You'll be enchanted by the light in this particular area ; in fact a world renowned American photographer published a book on the special light in this part of Tuscany using the photographs that were taken during one of his many visits here at the property
This unique antique Hamlet of Castelrotto has a large shared in ground swimming pool that measures 6 m. x 4 m. that is immersed in the olive trees on a slope that faces the valley of the Ombrone river. It is composed of 3 separate and independent accommodations, one of which is the Fienile cottage
The "Casanova" , and The "Fagianaia", or Pheasant house, compose the other properties that are part of the Castelrotto hamlet. They are both situated on the first floor of their respective farmhouses and each has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, one of which is with a bath in addition to the shower. Three of these rooms have single beds and one room has a double bed. The large living rooms have country style sit-in log burning fireplaces while large eat- in kitchens have antique dining tables. Both of these apartments are decorated with a contemporary and comfortable style using original antiques that belong to the family. These apartments can accommodate very comfortably up to 8 guests. Special requests are also honoured for additional beds.
We are only a stone's throw away from Montalcino, a wine lovers dream, in fact you can see it perched on the neighbouring hilltop, and Siena and Pienza are just a little over a 30 minute drive away. There are numerous other historical towns to visit in the area.
We also have 2 large apartments on the first floor of their respective farmhouses which are also part of the historical hamlet that we call Castelrotto.. These other accommodations ( Casanova and Fagianaia) are ideal for families with children and each one has 4 double bedrooms . Please don't hesistate to contact us for any information regarding these accommodations should you need more space.
Please bring a copy of your passport with you for registration with the local authorities. We ask a dowpayment of 30% to secure your booking , payable by bank transfer, and the remaining sum can be paid with Mastercard or Visa upon your arrival. Final cleaning is included in the rental cost. There is a newly implemented tourist tax of 1 euro per adult per day , with children under 14 years of age exempt. Please be aware that the check in time is no later than 7.30 pm. For those who arrive later in the evening, we must be notified of this so that we can arrange for someone to meet you . There will be an additional charge of 25-50 euros for after hour late arrivals.
The electrical consumption that is used for the air conditioning will be charged separately. This is calculated from the day of arrival to the day of departure and should be paid in cash prior to your departure.
The Tuscany region
Presently known as an important agricultural centre on the gentler side of the Sienese Clay Hills. Buonconvento already flourished in ancient times thanks to its particular geographical situation; at the confluence of the Arbia and Ombrone rivers on one hand, and along the route of the all-important medieval Via Francigena on the other.
Amongst the numerous sights worth seeing are an uncommon number of fine Liberty-style noble farm-houses. that are scattered amongst the hilltops and valleys all around the area. There are many "castles" as well that one encounters enroute while driving around the countryside, such as the fortress of Bibbiano Guiglieschi, over a thousand years old, the Tower of Bibbiano and the great architectural complex of Castelnuovo Tancredi (which is our home and probably one of the most photographed castles in all of Italy)
Nearby: Montalcino, San Quirico d' Orcia, Vescovado di Murlo, Murlo with its archaelogical excavations , Pienza, and Siena
The main tourist attraction (apart from the typical gastronomic delights such as the Val d'Arbia DOC white wine and vinsanto, or the white truffles from the Sienese Clay Hills) is, however, the important Sacred Art Museum, which houses works from the local churches: amongst these are paintings by Sano di Pietro and Matteo di Giovanni, as well as interesting wooden and marble sculptures.
Distances Siena 28 Km - Florence 95 Km - Pisa 140 Km
After Siena town, the most famous places in the area are:
San Gimignano, famous for its towers
Monteriggioni, the walled town, pretty but very small.
Colle val d' Elsa, is a big town divided into 3 different levels, colle bassa, alta and castle
Castellina in Chianti, the heart of Chianti
Radda in Chianti, for me the prettiest town of the Chianti area
Murlo,a very interesting etruscan museum at Vescovado di Murlo
Asciano, the area nearby and the near Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore
Pienza, the perfect town
Montalcino, the town of the famous wine with many great restaurants
San Quirico d' Orcia ,the door over the Val d' Orcia
Bagno Vignoni ,antique thermal baths
Montepulciano ,beautiful rinascimental town
Radicofani at the foot of the Monte Amiata
Rocca d' Orcia with the imposing tower
Chiusi ,impressive the Duomo and the Etruscan rests
Abbey of San Galgano is definitely worth the visit
Abbey of Sant' Antimo is another must
Twice a year on July 2 and Aug. 16 the famous Palio of Siena takes place and is definitely one of the most popular of italian traditional festivities.
There is a large supermarket in Buonconvento (just 3 km. away ) where you will find everything. In the same town, there is a butcher, a tabacchi shop, numerous little bars and restaurants, 2 different banks, and gastronomically oriented shops. There is a farmer's market every Saturday as well.
Here are a few suggestions for things to do while you stay in the area:
-Horse riding and trekking in this unspoilt countryside
-Hot air ballooning
-Numerous bike paths with designated itineraries such as the now well known "Eroica", which also organizes every year in October, an itinerary along the paths with old fashion and vintage bicycles
For those who seek tranquility and pure relaxation during their stay in Tuscany, and are inspired by the spirituality that this environment transmits, then we suggest the following:
-Hot-spring resorts in Val D'Orcia (Bagno Vignone)
-Trekking on the antique Francigena way
-Visit the beautiful town of Pienza and take a trip to the magic atmosphere of Italian Renaissance
-Excursions to Montalcino, Tuscany
-Golf club (Borgo La Bagnaia is the nearest one)

"Great place for family and friends"
We rented all three cottages for a group of 17 including small children and adults. We couldn't have asked for a better vacation. The area is beautiful, serene and relaxing. Having the pool there took the pressure off having to "do something" everyday and kept the kids entertained. Buonconvento is a great little town, that has everything you will need. The owners and their staff couldn't have been more accomodating and helpful in making our stay a success. Easily accessible to Siena and Florence by train or car. I highly recommend this property; particulalry for large groups.
