The Tuscany region
Set in the beautiful Tuscan countryside, with attractive villages nestled in the Chianti hills in the north, the Val di Chiana to the east, the Val d'Orcia in the south, or north of Pisa.
All within easy reach of Florence and Siena, as well as smaller historic towns, such as San Gimignano and Pienza.
The Town of Buonconvento lies between Siena and the Val d'Orcia, on the SS2 Cassia, between Siena, Val d'Orcia and the hills of Montalcino. Buonconvento is now an important rural centre. Thanks to its strategic position on the old Via Francigena it has a very ancient past.
The town is for great part still enclosed inside the century city walls, built in bricks by the Sienesi in 1371. It still preserves the monumental north gate (also called Senese Gate) and the rectangular plan of that period, many of the towers and great part of the battlements and machicolations.
It was in this Tuscan town that Renaissance town-planning concepts were first put into practice after Pope Pius II decided to transform the look of his birthplace. He chose the architect Bernardo Rossellino, who applied the principles of Leon Battista Alberti. This new vision of urban space was realized in the superb square known as Piazza Pio II and the buildings around it: the Piccolomini Palace, the Borgia Palace and the cathedral with its pure Renaissance exterior and an interior in the late Gothic style of south German churches.
The characteristic of Bagno Vignoni, is its unchanged structure. In fact, the main square of this town is not like other places, but is made by hot water that flows at 52°.
The thermal water basin is in the middle of the square, closed on three sides by the town walls All around there are some buildings by Bernardo Rossellino in Pope’s Pio II honour, and the open arcade where S. Caterina da Siena stopped.
