BookThe Queensland / Darling Downs region
The spectacular Bunya Mountains are an isolated section of the Great Dividing Range situated around 150km inland from the coast. Home to the world's largest forest of bunya trees, the vast subtropical forest is mixture of rainforest, eucalyptus, and woodlands. The mountains rise abruptly from the surrounding plains reaching 1100m above sea level at Mounts Mowbullum and Kiangarow. The range features panoramic mountain scenery, and breathtaking views over the Darling Downs plains and the South Burnett region.
The region has 4 distinct seasons. In October the fireflies flash at dusk and the King Orchids flower a brilliant yellow in the canopy tops. Home to 121 species of birds, many of them rare, with King Parrots, Crimson Rosellas and Bowerbirds a common sight. Typically up to 10o C cooler than surrounding areas in summer, the Mountains provide a delightful and refreshing break from the Queensland summer heat. Birds are particularly friendly in summer, spring and autumn.
Large number of wallabies and pademelons ("kangaroos") are a common sight.

* 121 species of birds to spot
* Take in the view from Fisher's Lookout
