The Adriatic Coast region
Montenegro really is a hidden gem. This small and enchanting country with its dramatic Adriatic coastline lined with medieval towns and sandy beaches, together with the wild beauty of its mountainous interior bursting with lakes, dense forest, dramatic mountain ranges and deep canyons surely justify its description as 'the Pearl of the Adriatic'. Byron was right when he said at the birth of our planet the most beautiful encounter between the land and sea must have happened at the coast of Montenegro.
Petrovac is part of the Budva Riviera. This length of coast is Montenegro's main centre for coastal tourism. It has many beaches ranging from the lively beaches of Budva and Becici, to the beautiful royal beaches of Milocer and Queens Beach. Also hidden amongst these established beaches are many pretty little coves and bays which are a delight to find and explore. Along this riviera is Sveti Stefan (11km) the island hotel of royalty and Hollywood stars. The heart of the riviera is the lively resort of Budva (20km) with its marina and delightful walled old medieval town. Wonder down its narrrow streets lined with shops, cafes and restaurants. There are many things to see and do here such as festivals, water skiing & bungy jumping. The beaches and resorts along this riviera are easily accessible by car, bus (small manned station 2 minute walk from apartment), small ferry boats from the harbour ( 3 minute walk ) or taxi.
Further south is the lively resort of Sutomore (5km) and the old pirate town of Ulcinj (with its12km of soft white sandy beach). Other resorts on the Adriatic coast worth visiting are Herceg Novi and Tivat.
The Boka Kotorska (40km away) is Southern Europes largest fjord lined with medieval towns such as Kotor, Perast and Risan. Member of the 'Most Beautiful Bay In The World Club' and it is not hard to see why, the scenery is literally breathtaking. It is easily reached by car or bus. Cetinj the ancient hilltop capital of Montenegro and the mausoleum on Lovcen ( Montenegro's Mount Olympus) are also easily accessible (38km) by car or bus.
Sat at the foot of the Petrovac mountain road (E65/E80) and 5km from the new road Sozina tunnel, Petrovac is ideally placed for accessing and exploring the 'wild beauty' of the interior of this mountainous country.
Skadar Lake, a National Park and one of the largest fresh water inland lakes in Southern Europe is nearby (20km). Home to many rare birds, boat trips from Virpazar (20km) can be taken to explore this vast lake with its little fishing villages and monastry islands
Further afield is the dramatic cliff-face Ostrog Monastry & the beautiful Moraca Monastry. Also there is the Tara Canyon ( largest canyon in Europe), Durmitor National Park (ski resort and World Heritage Site) and Biogradska Gora ( the world's second oldest National Park and one of 3 remaining virgin forests left in Europe).
Pick ups for daily excursions to most of the above, including white water rafting down the Tara Canyon, are possible from Petrovac (see the agent).
Budva Riviera / Petrovac area
Petrovac was described in a recent travel guide as somewhere travel writers are tempted to omit in the hope that the place stays exactly as it is and never changes.
This charming and picturesque resort is set in the beautiful Petrovac Bay and is hidden amongst olive groves & pine trees while an impressive mountain range towers behind. Over the last century this old fishing village has evolved into a lovely resort, managing to retain it's original character and charm, making it suitable for families and couples.
There are 2 beaches , Petrovac Town Beach (600m long) and the quieter Lucice Beach (200m long).
The pretty beach promenade is lined with old stone buildings from a bygone age. These buildings, now shops, restaurants, pizzerias, cafe bars and even an art gallery and internet cafe, are set amongst trees and scented flower gardens. At the west end of the beach is the small harbour with the 16th century Venetian fortress Kastel Lastva ( a nightclub in the evening ). During the summer months you can catch small ferry boats from the harbour to neighbouring beaches along the Budva Riviera. There are many restaurants along the harbour serving fish caught earlier in the morning from their own boats ( You can often see them in the bay from the apartment balcony in their little boats - if you are up early enough! ). Nearby the excellent 4 star Ambassador restaurant serves excellent food which washes down well with a glass of the local Vranac wine.
Where ever you go in Petrovac or Lucice Bay your eyes will always be drawn to the 2 little islets set out in the bay, Veliki Katic and Mali Katic (Sveta Nedjelja). The latter has a pretty little chapel (Sveta Nedjelja - St. Sunday)built by shipwrecked sailors in gratitude to the kindness of the people of the town. These islands, the old shipwrecked Austrohungarian ship Zenta, the Donkova Seka reef and the conditions of the bay make this area a favourite for snorklers.
Evidence of Petrovac's long history can be seen around the village with its 17th century churches and even a recently uncovered 3rd century Roman mosaic floor.
Behind the harbour a path leads along the cliff top shaded by trees onto Perazica beach and then onto Rezvici Monastry which welcomes visitors - the monks amongst other things sell home grown organic olive oil ! Other signed paths from Petrovac take you to the large pebbly beach of Buljarica and Gradiste monastry.
Other facilities in Petrovac include tennis courts and a mini go-kart course
There is a 3 day festival in the town from the 20th August.
