The Algarve region
Lagos: Only 10 minutes away by car, Lagos is a major port and historically one of the Algarve’s most interesting cities, with a beautiful marina, and a superb promenade which stretches as far as the old Fort. There are a variety of shops that specialise in silver, pottery, leather, copper and filigree as well as plenty of restaurants, cafes and banks.
There’s a daily fish, meat and vegetable market from 8 am to 1 pm. Lagos also has some beautiful beaches to offer, Praia de Dona Ana, Praia do Camilo, and Meia Praia. The headland of Ponta da Piedade, with its beautiful caves, rocks formations clear waters and lighthouse is worth a visit.
Lagos is Essentially now an important tourist town. There are still many architectural signs of its ancient past, even a building dating originally back to around 1445 which is recorded as being Europe’s first building used as a slave market. The walls of the town in the most part, remain after sections were restored. Attached to the famous 17th Century "gold" church of Santo António there is a small museum of regional items, some of which are quite odd!
There are several interesting statues erected to the famous figures of the past that are associated with the history of this town. None more controversial that the sculpture of Dom Sebastião standing in the main square in front of the Town Hall. A more recent statue commemorates the Algarve’s only Saint, São Gonçalo de Lagos, who was born in 1360 and died in 1422 in Torres Vedras. Pope Pio VI raised him to Sainthood in 1778.
The town’s more recently constructed Marina presents a lovely picture and this harbour is practically the first sight a visitor has of Lagos. Besides the boats that find it convenient as a permanent mooring, it is usually full of yachts passing on the way or returning from the Mediterranean and the Americas. At the entrance to the harbour is the "Forte da Bandeira" which was constructed in the 17th Century.
Near to the centre of the town, there is a reasonably modern Cultural Centre, in which various exhibitions and culturally related events are held during the year. In the Marina visitors will find different boat tours, yacht hire, and deep sea-fishing outings that can be booked.
Budens area
Sagres & Cape St Vincent: Five miles away on the Lagos to Sagres road, Sagres, also known as "the lands end of Europe" is situated inside the Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina Natural Park. The coast is scattered with an array of beaches, and the natural landscapes and scenery are absolutely stunning. Baleeira is a small picturesque fishing port of Sagres, which is near to Praia do Martinhal, the biggest beach in the area which is also most protected from the wind.
The 15th Century Fortress and the church of Nossa Senhora da Graça, (was founded by Prince Henry the Navigator) stand on the 'On Ponta de Sagres'. The old light house on Cape St. Vincent is the second most powerful lighthouse in Europe which keeps watch over one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. Take a walk around the fort and watch the fishermen perching precariously off cliff edges hoping for a catch.

Guestbook
"I just wanted to let you know how much we all enjoyed our stay at the Villa. The house was just as descried in your details, clean, spacious, light & airy & very relaxing. The location was excellent being a mile from the beach meant we were able to walk there without the children getting too tired! When we weren't on days out at water parks and exploring the nearby towns we were in and out of the pool and enjoying barbeques & drinks on the patio. The weather was gorgeous, the food superb and the location perfect."
Julia Wells, Oxfordshire, July 2007
"We thoroughly enjoyed our two week stay at Villa Santa Maria. We found your home very comfortable and traditionally Portuguese. We enjoyed the cobbled streets and old buildings of Lagos, the fort, the lighthouse and incredible views of Sagres, and relished hiking in the Mochique mountains. We were spoilt for choice at the local restaurants and picked up some beautiful ceramic souvenirs from the pottery shop you recommended"
James & Eleanor Kennedy, Cheshire, September 2006
"Just a quick note to say a very big thank-you for the use of your Villa. My family and I had a fantastic time, the location was great, weather hot and it was very relaxing. We played golf at Parque de Floresta and it was surprising how often we managed to spot the Villa from the course. The maid was a welcome face in the morning and kept the place clean and tidy. Once again many thanks and I am sure this is a place we would like to return to in the future."
Dave Jeffreys, Surrey, August 2006
"Just to say that we had a fantastic stay at your villa. The weather was fabulous even though it was the start of the season. We tried all sorts of delicious food including lots of fish and sea food! There was plenty to do and see, and everything was very reasonably priced, but most of the time we just wanted to sunbathe round the pool. Many thanks for a lovely holiday."
Diane Foster, Devon, May 2006
