Enquire nowThe West Country / Cornwall region
Situated in the South West tip of Great Britain Cornwall is a very popular holiday destination. It has a diverse landscape from its craggy granite coastline, lush green countryside and dramatic, unspoilt wilderness of the moors.
Its mild climate and waters are warmed by the Gulf Stream givng a micro-climate where excotic flora can be found. The warm summer days are perfect for enjoying the shoreline - strolling along the sea-shore, exploring the rock pools or, for the more energetic, surfing in the Atlantic breakers. The white-washed cottages in quaint villages such as Fowey, Padstow, Port Isaac tumble down to the water's edge and at Port Isaac the local singing group of Fishermen - Fishermens Friends - entertain visitors on the harbourside during the holiday season. No visitor should leave Cornwall without seeing Tintagel and the ruined remains on the headland of the castle linked to the Arthurian legend of King Arthur and Camelot.
Inland the picturesque country lanes ablaze with wild flowers lead to historic country houses like Cotehele or Lanhydrock or magnificent gardens - Probus, Trelissick or the iconic rocky island of St Michael's Mount just a few hundred yards from the coastal village of Marazion. The mystery of the Lost Gardens of Heligan is solved to all who fo there and nearby is The Eden Project - the 20th Century marvel of Bio-domes risng from old quarry and providing visitors with the experience of climates and there flora throughout the world within the great domes.
Cornwall has something for everyone - relaxation, peace and solitude ; exhilaration and outdoor adventure; our heritage and history. Spend sometime in Cornwall and see for yourself.
The Bude / Kilkhampton area
Bude is an area often descriubed as 'where coast meets countryside' since, situated on the North Cornish coast, it offers one of the most stunning coastlines in Europe, much of it designated as an area of 'outstanding natural beauty'. The town of Bude retains much of its old world charm, it has a variety of shops, mostly locally owned including craft shops and a small art gallery and a selection of places to eat catering for all tastes offering locally caught fish, pubs serving local produce and traditional fare.
The Bude Canal opened in 1825 to transport sea sand to fertilise the uplands is no longer used commercially but is now a great resource for boating, fishing and walking. Abundant wildlife can be found in the Bude Marshes and along the pathways of the canal.
Annually, at the end of August Bude is the venue for the Bude Jazz Festival and there are street parades - New Orleans Style - and many places in and around Bude with lively Jazz sessions. Bude has a busy diary featuring a Festival of Music, Carnival Week, Lifeboat Day and at nearby Poughill the Battle of Stratton is re-enacted in Mid May each year.
Kilkhampton on the A39, is a small village about 5 miles from Bude. with its beautiful church of St James. The church has an elaborate Norman doorway and ornate interior - look at the ends of the pews - and has a close connection with the Grenville Family from the days of Englands Civil war and imortalised in Daphne du Maurier's 'The King's General'. The annual flower festival, held in the Church, is supported by the local business's and the displays reflect what they have to offer, Kilkhampton once boasted a castle but only the keen eyed can detect it now, a green hump in a field!
A great place to meet everyone is the annual Village Fayre where produce is displayed for sale, Arts and Crafts of local craftsman, activities for the children and the Carnival Queen is chosen.
Our properties are situated at Penstowe Park within its 30 acres of Parkland. Just off the A39 it is ideally situated, with easy access to many attractions both in Cornwall and North Devon. Clovelly, the picturesque fishing village, hangs on the steep slopes of the cliffs with its cobbled street - Up-along-down-along - used to have donkeys to carry goods to the cottages, is only 12 miles from the Park. Travel further up the A39 to the towns of Bideford and the panier market at Barnstaple.
Three miles inland are the Tamar Lakes great for Fishing, Sailing and Walking. An adventure playground alongside the Upper lake is great fun for the younger members of the family. Several Bird Hides built on the sides of the lakes are the perfect venue for Bird watching.
The beaches of Duckpool, Sandymouth and Northcott Mouth are within a few miles drive and for the Surfing enthuisiast visit Crooklets, Summerleaze and Widemouth offer the rolling Atlantic Breakers. The South West Coastal footpath is perfect for gentle strolls, family walks or the experienced walker and the views from the clifftops across the sea or inland to the moors is breathtaking.
Golf is available at the Course of Bude or Holsworthy. Nearby are several Horse Riding establishments and you can also hire Bicycles to explore the quiet country lanes and scenic coastal paths or a few miles away the established Tarka or Camel trails.
A warm Cornish welcome is extended to all who visit.
