The West Country region

Stratton village is an old and pretty 17th cent stone village with 3 old pubs and a few restaurants. The large Tree Inn with its bars/restaurant and courtyard has a full size painting in its courtyard of the Cornish giant Tony Paine. Footpath walks lead off from the village and into Bude. Go up the hill and down the other side (under 2 miles) and you will be in Bude. Bude is a beach resort and is often quoted as a quieter alternative to busier Newquay further down the coast. There is a huge and free open air swimming pool on the main beach, built into the side of the cliffs. Miles of huge classic sandy beaches, excellent surfing. Try boating up Bude Canal (rowing boat hire), walks along Bude Canal ending in tearooms passing by the Bird Nature Reserve. Visit Hartland Abbey about 9 miles further up the coast (an intact house and gardens with many treasures and Gainsborough paintings etc). Coarse fishing in Bude Canal. A short drive down the coast takes you to ever popular Boscastle fishing village and Tintagel (with King Arthurs Castle perched on the cliff-views over surrounding sea).
