The Central Hungary/Danube region
Buda and Pest: two cities, split by the river Danube.
Bustling Pest has historical treasures from its Habsburg and Jewish past, while verdant, hilly Buda was the home of the royals and the castle is well worth a visit. Today a hiker’s heaven, it has stunning views over Pest and the Danube.
Although Hungary joined the European Union in 2004, its capital retains an eastern mystique, with twisty old streets lined with beautiful architecture and an attractive coffee shop culture.
Budapest / District 6 area
Although walking around the City is an absolute pleasure, we would suggest that on your first day you take a tour of the City (buses leave from Andrassy, which will allow you to get a feel for the layout of the City in order that you can plan your itinerary).
From there you can choose to visit the wonderful National Museum or the chilling but essential Terror Museum, catch a concert at the Opera House (or at any other of the many music halls that are dotted around the City) take a boat trip up the Danube, walk around the Castle District, relax at the Gellert or Szechenyi baths.
In Summer, Margrit Island is worth a visit where you can sunbathe and swim in the pool or rent a bike for a trip around the island. By evening, all the restaurants on Franz Liszt Terrace open their doors and spill out onto the pavement from where you can enjoy a glass of delicious Hungarian wine and a spot of people watching.
In Winter, Budapest is glorious; the tree-lined Andrassy avenue is lit up with fairy lights and Vorosmarty terrace plays host to a Christmas market where you can stop for a warming glass of Gluehwein before embarking on a shopping spree on Vaci Utca..
