Fisherman's Apartment
About the home
This centrally located TWO BEDROOM courtyard apartment is ideal for couples, friends and families alike. With all the facilities you might require from hair dryer to a washer dryer. Although advertised for 2-4 people, it can accommodate up to 6 (comfortable double sofa bed) , so room enough for a family.
It comes with WIFI INTERNET and cable television with international channels to help you unwind after a long days sightseeing or plan the next.
The fitted kitchen is reached a few steps up from the sitting and dining area enabling you to self cater at what ever level suits you, be it fresh rolls for breakfast or spit roasting a chicken.
Throughout the apartment you will find plenty of storage space for your luggage and belongings.
Just five minutes walk along the Danube and next to the Metro, bus and tram, there is a Spar supermarket with café facilities and cash point making it a perfect and charming base from which to explore Budapest. In addition, there are at least eight restaurants within 100 metres, from cordon bleu to authentic Hungarian and Korean cuisine.
The city divided by the Danube into Buda and Pest can be easily explored on foot or just take a tram or metro to anywhere in the city. For the cost of about £12, a weekly ticket allows you to use all forms of public transport. Tram 6 is a great circular route to see the city through the eyes of the locals, with no better way to soak in the atmosphere and see some of the many fascinating sites. The weekly ticket allows you to just hop on and off whether to visit an attraction or just while some time away watching the world go by over a coffee and a pastry or an ice cold beer.
Up behind the apartment, you will find the famous Castle District and Matthias Church along with some spectacular views from the Fisherman's Bastion. Some pleasant restaurants and cafes provide refreshments and on a hot day the cool underground “Labyrinth” is worth a visit.
One thing not to be missed whilst here are the world famous thermal baths, from the classical architecture of the Gellert Baths to the Original Rudas Turkish Bath (circa 1566) just ten minutes from the apartment, these subterranean waters packed full of beneficial minerals are a lot more than just a hot soak. Follow this up with a massage for around £10 and you will be so relaxed that an evening meal in the Paris Garden restaurant below the apartment will be all that you need to round off the day.
In addition to many pretty sites including the colourful market and outstanding parliament buildings, Budapest is also full of cool parks and Margit Island situated in the middle of the Danube, provides a green haven to stroll or cycle through.

The Central Hungary/Danube region

Sitting right in the centre of Europe for over 1000 years, Hungary has been influenced by many diverse cultures, absorbing the richness of the Turks, the architecture of the Habsburgs as well as the 50 years within the Russian influence in addition to its own extensive traditions.
For an alternative day out, 30 miles North-west of Budapest there is the ancient City of Esztergom, with its magnificent Basilica standing proudly by the Danube and overlooking the Slovakian town of Sturovo. A 5 minute stroll over the Maria Valeria Bridge re-opened in 2001 after its destruction in 1945 takes you into yet another country and with more sites and sounds (and cheap shopping!).
After an exploration of the sites, you can retire to the newly opened thermal complex that has everything from pools and water slides to Turkish baths and a full range of therapies and beauty treatments. For kids as well as adults there is a super little museum all about the River Danube, its management and resources.
In fact with all this to do and see you might wish to stay for a night in our apartment just 10 miles outside of this historic city up in the cool hills of the Pilis (pronounced pillish) mountain range. This ecologically unique area is home to many species of birds and is rich in the natural flora of its limestone habitat. With gorge walks and caving, horse riding or just taking a stroll to one of the several to natural springs enjoying the some of the fresh mountain air, before returning to the buzz of Budapest.

The Budapest / District 1 area
District I or the Castle District as it is known, is an historic and very popular part of a beautiful city. Literally up behind the apartment is the Castle area, from where you can see right across the Danube to the city beyond. Sites worth visiting include the Matthias Church, the Fisher Bastion, the underground hospital, military museum amongst many other venues. I would also suggest the Cafe Ruszwurm Cafe for cake and coffee which you will have earned by walking up in the first place:-)
Come down on the funicular railway for another view across the Chain Bridge (Lanchid).
Another aspect of Budapest and Hungary not to be missed are the thermal waters that spill out from the ground at 60-70C. Both the Romans and the Turks took full advantage of them, so for a little luxury try the spa at the Racz Hotel or the original 1568 Turkish bath called the Rudas, where you can enjoy this tastefully restored bath, sauna and steam rooms as it as it once was - Both are about 5 minutes by tram - Afterwards stroll across the Szabodsag Bridge to the Great Market Hall or stop at the Gellert Hotel for yet more cakes............

Medical Tourism:
It is worth mentioning even if you had not considered it, that dentistry, beauty therapy and medical procedures are all available at much reduced prices compared to other private options. Dentistry has had a good reputation for years, with the Austrians, Swiss and Germans taking full advantage of it.
Beauty therapy includes permanent hair removal to just plain pampering, and although medical treatments are never something to be taken lightly, with some operations at around half the UK prices there are benefits to be had over and above a holiday.
Whilst we cannot recommend a specific dentist etc, if you wish to discuss some of these options we can certainly help bridge the confidence gap and assist you during your stay…
In addition to the sites mentioned, don't miss out on a river trip. Whether it is using the river taxis from Batthany Square (next to the Metro) or longer excursions up river to the pretty town of Szentendre with its artists and old charm or the hilltop castle of Visegrád, home to Hungary's mightiest medieval kings.
What Hungary lacks as a coastal beach, it more than makes up for it with its outdoor pool complexes, where you can find upwards of 5 pools, often including a thermal baths slides and wave machines together with cafés, bars for assorted snacks and meals.
An all day ticket is seldom more than a few pounds and they are large enough to ensure a quiet spot for a little sun worshiping, reading, resting or exhausting the kids.
Margit Island is a good place to start boasting two complexes in the middle of the Danube.
In the winter the Szechenyi baths has a thermally heated outdoor swimming pool, and just across the park is the newly renovated and beautiful Hero's Square Ice rink. Worth hiring some skates to experience it along with many locals, or just watch everyone else with a glass of mulled wine.

We had a great stay in December, Mark the owner was more than helpful, he gave us many tips and was most welcoming to this lovely little apartment. The location was fantastic just into Buda and the Castle district but very close to the CHainbridge so easy walking access into Pest.. where all the touristy stuff is. We enjoyed staying in Buda, up the castle there is the magnificent church of St Matthius where classical concerts take place.. also some wonderful restaurants..and great Hungarian food. The baths were a short tram ride away, there was a wine store really close to the house, where the staff were very obliging and introduced us to some great Hungarian wines. Their English is very good indeed. All in all, this is a great apartment with a very interested and kind host who was most helpful about all things Hungarian. oh and if you really need to plug in... there was cable TV too!! |

We have just come back from our first visit to Budapest and it was a real pleasure to stay in Mark's apartment. It is exactly as described on the web-site with everything you could need for a lovely stay in such a beautiful City. Mark was so helpful, giving us advice on where to take our 14 year son for his Birthday, Palace of Wonders and the Roman ruins, both are well worth a visit. I have told everybody about his apartment, as I would heartly recommend it to anybody considering visiting Budapest. |

Guestbook for Fisherman's Apartment
"Hi Mark,
Just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our trip to Budapest. The apartment was very comfortable and in an excellent location. We recommended the apartment to my uncle and I hear they have booked to come in a couple of weeks time.
All your advice came in very handy! You'll be pleased to know that Granny's Pancakes now has an English menu - we were frequent visitors there!
Thanks again!" -Caroline and family April 2011
-A great location and super apartment, we explored just about all of Budapest in the two weeks. Thanks for all your help and tips - the Challenge Park was excellent with Pat managing the Brown route!! For anyone else coming, Fishermans really is good value and we enjoyed many little restaurants with what we saved.

- "So much to see, and amazingly good prices for a European capital. Lovely spot great atmosphere" - Paul and Heidi, West Sussex
(we have included this emailed comment in it's entirety as it says a little more about where to go etc)
- "Thank you from all of us, the information you provided us with during our stay was very helpful and the information brochures in the apartment were also very useful.
We were delighted with excellent standard of the apartment, it was roomy, fully equipped with all self catering needs for a stay, it was cosy and warm at night with the under floor heating, constant warm water, an excellent shower room and most importantly very safe and secure due to the location.
We took your advice and bought a seven day ticket for the Budapest transport system, which allowed us to use buses trams and the metro letting us travel unlimited throughout the city, excellent value at approx £10 for the week. The transport system in Budapest is excellent, the metro and the trams come along almost every 5 to 10 mins.
A couple of nights we were over in Pest eating out and instead of getting a taxi home we would sit in a coffee bar chatting to locals until the metro opened at 4.30am. The whole of the city seems to come alive again at approx 4am.
Although we stayed out into wee small hours the local people are very friendly and at no time did we witness any crime or feel threatened in any way.
The location of the flat was ideal for visiting the castle district's many tourist attractions and and would especially recommend a visit to the war museum. The close proximity to the metro station and trams also made it very easy to travel about both Buda and Pest.
Between us we managed to visit Heroes Square, the spa you told us about, the national football stadium, the house of terror, the Jewish Quarter, the puppet theatre, fashion street for some shopping and a number of excellent restaurants throughout the city.
We also managed a day trip to Vienna by train from Budapest and we were very impressed with the travel comfort on the train it only took 3 hours to get there.
The answer to what attracted us to your apartment was the excellent marketing information on the web site, the location was probably the main thing and I can confirm to other prospective tourists that the information advertised is accurate. Obviously cost is important as well and we were delighted with the excellent accommodation provided for a very reasonable rent.
Anyway Mark, thank you again for all you help and advice not only in the week we were there but also the information you e.mailed to us prior to arriving.
I certainly intend coming back to Budapest as there is still a lot we never managed to see and I will be in touch to to hire the Fisherman's apartment again.
I have also told a number of friends and work colleagues about my enjoyable holiday and I have told them about the quality and value of your apartment. So hopefully you may get some interest from this source." - Alexander, England
