The Central Hungary/Danube region

Buda

This name was given to the town that was built on the site of Aquincum which was an ancient roman city. After the Mongol invasion and the building of the Buda Castle people started to call it Óbuda (Old Buda). About the origin of the name there are 2 theories. According to the first it was named after the brother of Attila, the Hun which is possible because Buda was a common name at the time. The other theory is that it comes from the Slavic word „voda” which means water, and because it is a place which is rich in thermal water, this is also possible.

Pest

The origin of the name dates back to the times of the Settlement of the Magyars (Hungarians) in Hungary. The word Pest means cave in the Slavic language and in the old Hungarian language it means furnace. This is how the Gellért-hegy which was at the time called Pest-hegy got its name (because it has thermal water/ hot furnace inside of it). At the bottom of the hill was the place where people crossed the river, and the settlement on the other side of the river was named Pest.

Budapest

DISTRICT 9.The district is the biggest terrace restaurant/bar/cafe area of the city. Between the Kalvin Ter square and the Bakats Ter square the Raday utca, this street is mostly pedestrian and has many good quality shops and galleries.

Close to Raday street is the National Museum of Hungary, Liberty Bridge, pedestrian Vatci Utca, Gellert Baths and the Applied Arts Museum/Exhibitions. The bible museum and the Holocaust museums are also nearby.

The famous Central Market is the largest indoor food market in Hungary, a "must visit" for most tourists. For nightclub fans the popular outdoor and indoor ruin pubs are 10 mins away by public transport and on the opposite side of the bridge are large open air party areas.

"Ideal for us and our elderly parents - fantastic flat!"

We had a fantastic time in PJ's ground floor flat in a quiet part of Budapest. The location and facilities were ideal and as we landed on a public holiday we had arranged for a friend to buy some… More
