Home description

On the edge of the 19th century Jewish quarter in Pest Király Utca was a busy street of cloth merchants, tailors and sundry dealers occupying every nook and cranny. Nowadays the street is full of interior designers, furniture, textile and flower shops, restaurats, bars, coffee and cake shops. The 3 storey apartment building was built in the romantic style in 1863. The vaulted spaces on the ground floor were originally state of the art workshops when they were built. We converted one of these workshops into a comfortable and stylish apartment opening onto a prize wining garden courtyard .

The Central Hungary/Danube region

The Danube flows north to south dividing Hungary into two regions. Budapest is almost in the centre of the country and divided by the river, Buda on the west and Pest on the east. Many bridges connect the two cities, the most beautiful of which is the Chain Bridge designed by the Scotish engineer Adam Clark. Buda with its castle on the hill, serene old houses, squares, cathedral and cafes is the older of the two. The Gellért hotel, once the finest hotel in the capital, still retains one of the best baths, well worth a visit. The forested hills are a joy to walk amongst in any season of the year, or take the children's train. Pest, built later, is the larger of the two and contains the Parliament, theatres, Opera, Heroes' Square with its vast formality interupted by skateboarders trying new tricks and elegant rollerbladers whizzing around. Váci Street is equivalent to Bond Street in every way, Vörösmarty Square has the fabulous Gerbaud coffee house with - in my opinion - the best cakes in the world, the Pest bank of the Danube,a short 150m stagger away, offers beautiful views of the Buda hills with the castle perched on the closest one. With very good public transport - trams, metro, trolly buses and buses - there is no need to rent a car unless you want to jaunt out of the city. You can rent a bike or go on the boat to Margaret island or even out of Budapest to Szentendre, a classic small river town north of the capital .

Budapest / District 6 area

250 m East of the apartment is Liszt Square. With the superb Art Nouveau Music Academy one end and the fabulous Andrassy boulevard at the other end the tree filled square is surrounded by a wonderful selection of cafés and restaurats offering the opportunity to eat outside spring, summer, autumn and even winter with the aid of heated mushrooms and blankets. Also worth visiting are Heroes' Square (see above) with Varosliget Park and arboretum beyond, Széchenyi Baths where you can relax with thermal baths and massage. Gundel is a restaurant with a bob on itself, deservedly. The Zoo with its eclectic collection of animals and wonderful buildings designed by respected architects of different periods. Andrassy Utca links all of these delights. With 2kms of trees and palaces, shops and restaurants each side and the elegant small guage metro just under the street, it is the perfect artery, aestheticaly and practically.
