The Central Hungary region

Hungary is one of the oldest European countries, situated in the middle of the continent in Central Europe.

Hungary became a Christian kingdom in A.D. 1000 and for many centuries served as a bulwark against Ottoman Turkish expansion in Europe. The kingdom eventually became part of the polyglot Austro-Hungarian Empire, which collapsed during World War I. The country fell under Communist rule following World War II. In 1956, a revolt and an announced withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact were met with a massive military intervention by Moscow. Under the leadership of Janos KADAR in 1968, Hungary began liberalizing its economy, introducing so-called "Goulash Communism." Hungary held its first multiparty elections in 1990 and initiated a free market economy. It joined NATO in 1999 and the EU five years later. In 2011, Hungary assumed the six-month rotating presidency of the EU for the first time.

Budapest is the city of spas, there are a total of 118 hot springs in the city, which feed more than a dozen baths.

Budapest has long, warm, humid summers and short, cold winters. The city averages more sunshine per year than any other European city. Spring and autumn are beautiful here, as is the summer.Early April marks the beginning of spring, and by May the temperature can reach 21 (Celsius). Summer can be quite warm and humid with temperatures in the high 20s. It stays warm until October. December through February temperatures are usually between -6 and zero. It snows frequently, but the snowfall is light. From April to the end of September, there are about ten hours of sun per day.

Budapest

Madách sq. is on the west end of 7th district, in the vicinity of the 5th dist., the centre of Pest.

It was built in 1940 and was declared a historic monument by now. Originally the arch of Madách sq. was planned to be the start of an avenue connecting the inner parts of 7th disctrict to the centre of Pest, but because of World War II, works could not begin and Madách sq. became an elegant block of buildings close to the sights of the Jewish district as well as the historical centre.

The Dohány Street Synagogue, the largest functioning Jewish temple in Europe, is located in this district. The historic downtown of Budapest contains several bakeries, restaurants, bars (several ruin and retro pubs), non-stop groceries, ATM-s, currency exchange offices, pharmacies. Located close to the City Center, 2 minutes walk from the World Heritage Andrassy Avenue. Very good public transport to the Buda side (Castle 15 minutes by bus). It offers a great opportunity to walk around town, since everything is in walking distance.

In the vicinity lots of opportunities of entertainment are available such as:

-sightseeing tours in various forms, by bus, bicycle, segway, or public transport. Also various free walking tours start from nearby. Riverride - the unique floating bus!

-restaurants, bars (Rézangyal, Godot café, Akvárium, Szimpla, Trófea restaurant, Champs Pub, Sir Lancelot Medieval Restaurant)

- Dohány street Synagogue (second biggest synagogue of the World, after the one in New York City)

- Váci street (the first and main pedestrian of Pest, full of restaurants, bars, and shops.

- Andrássy avenue (the biggest avenue of Budapest, part of World Heritage, full of sights, bars, restaurants, shops, ends at Heroes' Square),

- Buda Castle (only 15 minutes from Deák square by bus no. 16, full of historical sights, museums, exhibitions, bars, restaurants, great walking areas with gardens)

- Memento Park buses start from Deák Square daily at 11am (in Memento Park you will find all that remained from the communist era in Hungary, statues and souvenirs),
