Home description
Our lovely 17th century farmhouse can fit 11 people comfortably, perfect for two families or a group of friends who want to holiday together. The large kitchen, with its long refectory table and Rayburn in the corner, is ideal for those big holiday breakfasts and dinners. We have two living rooms, one with a television, video and DVD (perhaps the TV and games room for the youngsters?), the other with a CD player. One lounge has a woodburner stove and the other has an open fire. The house is in the heart of the village, just behind the village pub, the Buck Inn.
The house itself is set in a quiet courtyard, with stunning views up to Buckden Pike, the hill that rises sharply behind the village. There's an open patio with a built-in barbecue, ready for that perfect summer's evening.
Clifford House Farm is owned by a group of friends who have all fallen in love with the beauty of the valleys, lanes, villages and hills of this breathtaking part of England. We all holiday in the house ourselves, several times a year, relishing that first pint of Old Peculier and stiff walk up the path to Cray as we make the long journey up the M1! We certainly hope that you will also leave at the end of your holiday with the same fondness that we all have for the village and the dale.

The Northern England / Yorkshire / Yorkshire region
The Yorkshire Dales is perfect walking country, although there is plenty to see and do which does not involve walking. There are market towns, castles, ruined abbeys, cheesemaking, model farms, steam railways, picturesque villages, pubs, upmarket restaurants and so much more all within a short driving distance. And if you're looking for that perfect winter setting, Buckden is high enough that we usually have snow during the winter.

Buckden area
The village of Kettlewell is only a ten minute drive down the valley (Kettlewell is where they filmed "Calendar Girls") and Grassington, the lovely old market village, is a further 15 minutes along the road. Skipton, "Gateway to the Dales", is the large market town closest to us, where you can do your normal food and general shopping (that said, there is a handy village stores in Buckden itself, where you can get your basics: paper, milk and postcards). Fountains Abbey, Jervaulx Abbey, Bolton Abbey, Ripon Cathedral, Harrogate, Embsay-Bolton Abbey Steam Railway, Malham Cove, Ribblehead Viaduct, Skipton Castle and Wensleydale Creamery are all close by.
Buckden itself is a village at the top of Wharfedale, where the road splits in two. Both branches run over to Wensleydale, one branch up over the very top via Hubberholme and Yockenthwiate. The other via Cray and Bishopdale, and past West Burton. Buckden sits on the River Wharfe and the Dales Way passes by. The village pub, the Buck Inn, is a large, Georgian coaching inn. There are two hamlets a mile or two further up the dale, Hubberholme with its ancient parish church (J B Priestley's favourite church, his ashes are held there) and Cray. In Hubberholme you can visit the George, a pretty whitewashed pub opposite the church and next to the river. And at Cray you have the marvelously friendly White Lion. Both pubs serve good pub food in front of open fires, fabulous settings for a lunchtime pint or an evening meal.
Back down the valley you have the village of Starbotton (the Fox & Hounds pub is lovely) and then Kettlewell with its large village stores, tourist shops, three pubs (try the Bluebell) and gorgeous church. And Grassington is only a few miles further back down the road, where you can pretty much get all your shopping done (there's a small supermarket, butcher, baker, that sort of thing).
The kids will love climbing up Buckden Beck behind the village and up to the waterfall. They can also splash about at Yokenthwaite where the river flows gently over the flat "limestone pavement", forming pools and little cataracts.
How to get there
Buckden is a village in Upper Wharfedale, in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
The house is in the middle of the village, immediately behind the pub, the Buck Inn.
The village is 15 miles north of Skipton on the B6160 (from Skipton go north on the B6265 to Grassington, then on to Buckden on the B6160, which is two villages past Kettlewell). You can also arrive from the north, down the B6160 from the direction of Hawes-Leyburn-Richmond.
The nearest railway station is Skipton, although ideally you'll need your own car to make the best of Buckden and the surrounding countryside.

Further details indoors: There are two double bedrooms, two twin bedrooms and a tripple room. There is also a cot. The bathroom has a bath and a shower unit, and one of the double bedrooms has a second shower unit.
The kitchen is well equipped, and you should find everything you need for a self-catering break. We have a Rayburn in the kitchen (like an Aga but a different brand) which you can see in one of the photographs. But, there is also a modern electric cooker, which is a bit more practical and easier to use! Although we don't have a high chair, we do have two booster seats to place on the dining chairs which are a pretty good substitute.
One bedroom (a twin) is on the ground floor. There is also a toilet on the ground floor, just off the entrance hall.
The property has oil fired central heating (as well as an open fire and a wood burning stove in the living rooms!).
You can dry your wet walking boots and gear in the boiler room just at the side of the house. Logs and coal are available (for details, please refer to our guest manual when you arrive).
Further details outdoors: We have parking spaces for three cars, although you should also find one or two further spaces just down the lane leading up to the house. The house is set in a quiet courtyard, the original farmyard, and we have a open patio area at the back, with lovely views of Buckden Pike, which has a built-in barbecue for your use.
Further details
We operate a strictly no smoking policy. We would appreciate your understanding on this point.
One thing we've found very useful is that Tescos will deliver to our door! You can do your shop on-line and they deliver from the Skipton branch, marvellous really. It's been such a help. www.tesco.com

DURATION OF BOOKING
Other than short winter breaks (which may be agreed on an ad hoc basis), all bookings are for eight days, seven nights, from Saturday to Saturday. Some flexibility may be allowed during the Christmas and New Year period, to take account of the days on which Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall.
“CHECKING IN, CHECKING OUT”
You may only arrive after 3pm on the day of arrival, and we ask you to leave the property by 10am on the day of departure (unless prior arrangement has been agreed with the owner). Please help us by observing this rule – it takes several hours to clean, service and “turn around” the house for the next guests.
It may be possible for you to arrive earlier or leave later, particularly if it is not a Saturday or it is in the off-season, but please check with us first. Even if we agree to this, you must double-check with us one or two days before your holiday, because if we have subsequently taken a booking adjacent to yours, you will have to observe the 10am/3pm rule.
BOOKING CONDITIONS
1/3rd of the rental fee is payable at the time of booking to confirm your reservation. Until we receive this 1/3rd deposit, we will not hold your booking and we will continue to make the property available.
The balance must be paid six weeks before the start of your visit. If we do not receive the balance by this deadline, we will release your booking and make the property available again. If in the meantime we receive a booking from someone else for the same period, we will let the property to that other person and return the money that we have received from you, less an administration charge equal to 10% of the rental fee.
CANCELLATION POLICY
If you wish to cancel your booking, we will make the property available again on the website. If we do not get a substitute booking for the same period, you will forfeit all of the deposit and any balance that you have paid us. If we are able to secure a substitute booking, we will return the money that we have received from you, less an administration charge equal to 10% of the rental fee.
WINTER SHORT BREAKS
During the very low season (ie December to Easter), but excluding Christmas, New Year and the February half-term school holidays) you can book short breaks (of up to four nights) which may start and finish on any day of the week. In other words, you don't have to book a full week from Saturday-to-Saturday. There is a fixed fee for this - the price for a short winter break, regardless of whether it's for one night or four nights, is £440.
Guestbook
We enjoyed the facilities and thought the house perfect for our holiday. The standard of accommodation was very high and I would have no hesitation in using or recommending the house to my friends.
The property is fantastic - I'd stayed there before and was glad to find an excuse to go back. The owner is also very friendly and helpful. The location is excellent for hill walking, and perfect for taking a complete break.
Lovely cottage, very roomy. Would definitely consider going back.
Excellent property - very well equipped and situated. Availability of fuel for fires very much appreciated
A thoroughly wonderful location and excellent standard of accommodation. Nice to have all the comforts of home including DVD player and DVDs to watch as well as amazing fires.
Walking. Great variety from up Buckden Pike and Great Whernside to Dales Way between Grassington and Starbotton. The bus service - we like not having to use a car.
Location good for walking straight from the cottage. Lots of things to do and see within driving distance. Fountains Abbey excellent - spent a whole day there.
Excellent property for families or friends sharing. Excellent walks on doorstep. Shop and pub only 1 minutes walk.
The house was well equipped, comfortable and well situated for walks directly from the house
The location was excellent for walking, either at low level along the river, or up on the hills. The property overall, was lovely and spacious and well equipped. The large dining table in the kitchen was lovely for family gatherings and gave a real homely feel. The front lobby was especially useful for muddy boots and the many coat hooks were well used
Lots of space for 2 families in the house. Very well equipped - we went home with most of the stuff we brought up!
The Buck pub is 2 mins walk away. You can start out on beautiful walks direct from the property.
