The East Anglia / Cambridgeshire region

East Anglia has long been England's arable farming centre. The flat expanses of land are ideal for growing crops of wheat and barley. Leisure pursuits are also provided by this landscape, with the Fens and Broads an ideal setting for boating holidays. There are also many historical towns and cities, such as the Cathedral town of Ely which was once an island, the University city of Cambridge and the historic market town of Bedford. There are many farmshows in and around this area in summer. For information on these and other interesting events contact Huntington Tourist Information tel: 01480 388 588

Buckden, Cambridge area

Buckden, Offord Cluny and Huntington all have excellent local pubs and Buckden has two good restaurants and there are many good eating places in the wider area.

Aside from Cambridge itself, with its historic colleges and museums, there are many lovely little towns, St. Ives is one (15 mins away) It lies on the medieval pilgrims trail to Canterbury, has an ancient bridge complete with a chapel (dated 1480) built into it for the pilgrims to pray for their safe journey. There is a statue of Oliver Cromwell who hailed from these parts, in the Market Square. Market days are Mondays and Fridays. Lots of local produce: fruit, vegetables and flowers, cheese, honey and meat, also especially good fresh fish.

Kimbolton Hemingford Abbott and Hemingford Grey are delightful villages, so is Houghton, with an ancient, unspoilt central square. They grind flour on Sundays in Houghton Mill (one old millstone has 1304 written on it), and sell to the public

There is ample opportunity to observe wildlife, especially birds in the area, Wyboston Lakes and Paxton Pits nature reserves very nearby, there is also Wood Green animal sanctuary 10 mins away, with lots of rescued pets, horses, pigs, etc. Great kids stuff.

For those who seek thrills and spills, there is Grafham Water (10 Mins) a famous centre for fishing, sailing and cycling. You can also go punting on the River Cam in Cambridge. Equiestrian centre in Offord Cluny 5 mins away where hacks are available for £27 per hour.

For the golfers amongst you, Brampton Park Golf course is only 10 mins. away, You can play a round for £27 or all day for £37 on weekdays. Booking advisable (01480 434700) Wyboston Lakes also has a Golf centre, at Lakeside Lodge, (01480 223 004).

Historic York is definitely worth visiting, although 2 hrs drive each way, north on the A1M. Make an early start and you will have a wonderful day.

Stamford is another gem of an old town, with wonderfully preserved centre, full of history, museum and for the ladies excellent fashion shops. Lunch at the Hotel George is an absolute must! 5 mins before you reach Stamford, there is one of England’s best stately homes, Burghley House, where the film Pride and Prejudice was filmed (They have some of the gowns from the film on permanent show). There are also beautiful. grounds with a lake to explore - you could spend a whole day there.
