The East Anglia / Cambridgeshire region
East Anglia has long been England's arable farming centre. The flat expanses of land are ideal for growing crops of wheat and barley. Leisure pursuits are also provided by this landscape, with the Fens and Broads an ideal setting for boating holidays. There are also many historical towns and cities, such as the Cathedral town of Ely which was once an island, the University city of Cambridge and the historic market town of Bedford. There are many farmshows in and around this area in summer. For information on these and other interesting events contact Huntington Tourist Information tel: 01480 388 588
Buckden, Cambridge area
Buckden, Offord Cluny and Huntington all have excellent local pubs and Buckden has two good restaurants and there are many good eating places in the wider area.
Aside from Cambridge itself, with its historic colleges and museums, there are many lovely little towns, St. Ives is one (15 mins away) It lies on the medieval pilgrims trail to Canterbury, has an ancient bridge complete with a chapel (dated 1480) built into it for the pilgrims to pray for their safe journey. There is a statue of Oliver Cromwell who hailed from these parts, in the Market Square. Market days are Mondays and Fridays. Lots of local produce: fruit, vegetables and flowers, cheese, honey and meat, also especially good fresh fish.
Kimbolton Hemingford Abbott and Hemingford Grey are delightful villages, so is Houghton, with an ancient, unspoilt central square. They grind flour on Sundays in Houghton Mill (one old millstone has 1304 written on it), and sell to the public
