The West Flanders region
Flanders is the Flemish part of Belgium. Dutch is the official language although most people speak excellent English. An area steeped in history with many beautiful medieval cities. You can visit the award winning and thought provoking war museums or the many art galleries and magnificent churches.
On the other hand you may just want to chill out on the 40km of white sandy beaches. Horse riding, cycling, sand yachting and water sports can all be catered for.
Belgium is famous for its beer and chocolate not to mention lace; all these can be found in Flanders. Belgians enjoy their food and there are more Michelin star restaurants in Belgium than in France!
Bruges area
Bruges has been described as the 'Venice of the north'. This medieval city has been perfectly preserved and the network of canals and bridges criss crossed with cobbled streets will transport you back 500 years. Small bars and restaurants abound where you can sample the delights of local food or try some of the 300 Belgian beers.
A short walk around the magnificent churches and ancient monuments not to mention the labyrinth of small streets will make you understand how the entire city centre was recently declared a world heritage site. You can take a boat tour of the city's canals or a horse and carriage ride through the network of picturesque streets. Many people just enjoy getting lost and stumbling upon some hidden gem.
Cycling is a very good way to explore the city as well as the surrounding villages. If the children fancy a change of scenery a trip to the local dolphinarium and theme park is a must. The white sandy beaches of Blankenburg, Zebrugge and Ostend are only a few miles away, as is the exclusive resort town of Knokke Hiest.. Whilst a car is convenient for travelling around Bruges and Flanders it is not necessary as the public transport system is very well organized and easy to use.
There are many festivals and pageants throughout the year, making every season special. The Tourist Information bureau will have information on all of these.
