The Cumbria/Lake District
The Lake District has some of England's best known scenery with stunning mountain views and glorious lakes. The central area, around Windermere and Ambleside, attracts the majority of tourists but those heading to the south-western pennisula are rewarded with equally beautiful and more tranquil vistas. Here the mountains meet the coast to create a dramatic landscape. Together with its wide range of tourist attractions, historical sites and leisure activities, this part of the Lakes certainly rewards more than one visit.
Broughton-in-Furness area
Broughton-in-Furness is handily situated to explore the less frequented parts of the Lake District. Coniston Water and Coniston Old Man are but a half hour’s drive away with museums and historic houses aplenty. Low level walks can be enjoyed such as around Tarn Hows or one in Broughton itself along a disused railway track. Cycling is also popular with a full set of mountain bike trails in nearby Grizedale Forest. There is a cycle hire shop in Broughton. The coast is close by with miles of beaches and dunes to explore, together with owl and wildlife sanctuaries.
In the summer, many villages put on local shows (Broughton's one is at the end of August). Here you will get to see Cumberland wrestling, fell racing, stick making, sheep shearing and many other rural activities and skills
