About the home

The Cart House is part of Ashlack Cottages, located near Ashlack Hall in the heart of the Lake District inside the National Park. Guests are welcome to walk from the doorstep across the woods, farmland and fells, of the 3,000 acre estate.

Coniston water is 10 mins by car. Windermere is 20 mins by car. There is a pub at the end of the lane - 10 minute walk. Courses and activities are available on site. There are many cultural excursions locally. Such as Beatrix Potter, Ruskin's house, Blackwell, motor museam, steamboat museam.

The Broughton-in-Furness area

Neolithic village on the fell - 20 minute walk from the Cart house. Beacon tarn for fresh water swimming and is about an hours walk away. Consiton is 10 minutes by car.

Ulverston a beautiful market town is 10 mins by car. Broughton in Furness also 10 minutes away has lots of nice pubs, an amazing butcher, baker and grocer, as well as an outdoor shop called the mountain centre - bicycles can be hired from here.

ARRIVING BY CAR: Take the M6 to junction 36 then turn onto the A590 to Barrow-in-Furness. Stay on this road for about 15 miles, through Newby Bridge and about 4/5 miles on from there, turn right to Greenodd, Workington and Coniston on the A5092. Follow this road for about 5/6 miles up a very steep hill through Gawthwaite and down the other side.

Continue down the hill, all the way to the bottom, and then take a right turning for Woodland (this will be the second turning for woodland that you will see). Before you have straightened your wheel, turn immediately right again and go straight for about half a mile. At the top of the lane you will come up to some farm buildings, as the road turns to the right, Keepers Cottage is on the right and The Cart House is straight ahead.

ARRIVING BY AIR: From Liverpool Airport it is about 2 hours drive up the M6 or from Manchester Airport about 1 1/2 hours.

ARRIVING BY TRAIN: The nearest station is Ulverston, but to get there you have to change trains at Preston. The best mainline station to get to is Oxenholme, just outside Kendal and the train service is very good either from Manchester or London Euston.

“A peaceful retreat” The Cart House was a quirky conversion, charming and perfectly situated for touring the area. It was clean, well equipped and in a beautiful, tranquil location on a working farm that you feel compelled to go exploring on. The village of Broughton nearby was great for a meal and had a nice butchers/deli. We would definately return.

“Fantastic location, a complete home-from-home” My fiance and I stayed in The Cart House for a weekend short break and can't recommend it highly enough. We were hoping for an idyllic retreat, that was dog friendly and in a perfect spot for walking - it certainly ticked all the boxes. The cottage is very comfortable, with a lovely cosy, homely feel - our cocker spaniel felt immediately at home! It is in a fantastic location for walking, surrounded by acres and acres of fields and fells, of which you are welcome to stroll for hours through at your leisure. We did not visit any of the surrounding pubs or shops in the area, as we had the dog in tow, but all seemed within easy driving distance. We are already making plans to return with other members of the family!

“Cosy and Warm” The Cart House has eveything we could want in a holiday cottage. It's warm and cosy. You can have the heating on anytime, if you want - no restrictions, although we much preferred using the Wood burner! The only extra are logs (if you use them) but they are right outside the door, chopped and stacked in a little log shed. No trailing round looking for somewhere that sells dry logs like some cottages! It's also perfect for people with dogs because there is superb walking, literally from the door. Perfect! There are 2 toilets which is good, especially if there are two couples/families staying. There isn't anything negative I could say about it. The situation for visiting the South Lakes is ideal with so many places to visit - so much to see and do. It's in a very pretty setting - you can see the hills and the sea from the cottage. How many places can boast that? We've stayed several times in another cottage on the estate, and that's just as good. You're not in a complex and the cottages are quite separate and individual, with plenty of room. The Cart House has a pretty little garden which would be lovely in summer for BBQ's. We will definitely go back.

“Please don't stay there !” Please don't stay there !.......... OK only joking :-) this is one of those places that you want to keep secret so that it is all ways available!!!! Quiet , out of the way place, with walks right out the door. Quality pub down the private drive (about two thirds of a mile) if you don't want to cook Local shops 3 miles away with one of the best butchers/deli in the Lake District! At the time of visit there was no internet/wifi , ( there was in the nearby barn / office) but they said they where looking to extend it. People with disabilities - this may be a yes , but not for wheel chairs due to 3/4 steps to the toilet / first bedroom. Quiet side garden for younger children , with acres of fields for older ones Good access to the southern and western lakes... This building is part of a set of buildings of different sizes from small to very large spread out over several acres. If you like being in the centre of things then may be this is not for you ! but as a quality retreat then I defy you to find better ! ;-) We have been three times now AND we will be back Make sure you call into the most decorative offices in the country!

“in the depths of the country.” we all enjoyed our stay here, accomodation was clean and comfortable with ample room, could maybe do with a second bathroom or shower. dont stay here if you need to shop regularly it is a peace and quiet place. you also need to be fit to climb the fell beside the property for a wonderful veiw.
