The Central Southern England / Hampshire region
The New Forest is undoubtedly one of the UK's premier tourist attractions. Every year visitors from all walks of life come here to experience its natural beauty. To the south, The New Forest runs down to the coast, offering views over the Solent and across to the Isle of Wight.
The New Forest heathlands and forest are in essence unchanged since they were given special protected status as a hunting ground by William the Conqueror over 900 years ago. That status has recently been enhanced by announcement that The New Forest is now a National Park. In fact, only about half of The New Forest is actually woodland; the remainder is open heathland, which bursts with colour in the summer and autumn months. The area is ideal for walking, cycling, sailing and horseriding and there are also plentiful beaches within easy reach.
Within the area there are inter-city rail links direct to Waterloo, as well as easy access to the M27 and the M3. There are also regular ferry crossings from Lymington to the Isle of Wight.
Brockenhurst area
Brockenhurst is situated in the heart of the New Forest and offers a good selection of shops, pubs and restaurants as well as cycle hire and horse-riding stables. Ponies, cows and donkeys roam freely around the village and sometimes even pigs can be seen hunting for acorns! From Brockenhurst's mainline railway station, London Waterloo can be reached in just 90 minutes with the towns of Southampton and Bournemouth, with its seven miles of golden sands, sparkling sea, beautiful award-winning gardens and water sports galore, only 20 minutes away.
Even closer is the town of Lymington - a haven for yachting enthusiasts, who enjoy the advantages of the double tides, with it's marina edged with shops full of sea faring clothes and plenty of places to eat and drink. Cobbled streets and 17th century houses make Lymington a must for visitors. The High Street is full of interesting shops and every Saturday becomes a hive of activity when it is lined with market stalls selling everything from vegetables to fabric and tools to antiques. A walk along the river leads to the open air sea water swimming pool, children's sandpit, play area and a boating pool.
Passenger and car ferries to the Isle of Wight go from Lymington and take approximately 30 minutes, or visitors can cruise the Solent from the town quay.
How to get there
