The Central England / Cotswolds / Worcestershire region

The Cotswolds, or "the heart of England", is an area that embraces several English counties and is one of the world's great travel destinations. The Cotswolds have been designated as an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and are well-loved for their atmospheric and distinctive limestone villages and towns. The Cotswolds is an area of gentle hills stretching over 100 miles North to South and 25 miles East to West, with stone walls criss-crossing a picturesque landscape with hidden river valleys and distinctive towns and villages made of Cotswold stone.

Among the British, the Cotswolds are the ideal place to escape. Cotswolds summer days are relaxed and long but log fires in winter, spring bluebells or Autumn colours are all good reasons why visitors come to the Cotswolds throughout the year.

Broadway area

Broadway is often referred to as the 'Jewel of the Cotswolds' and the 'Show Village of England' because of it's sheer beauty and magnificence. The 'broad way' (or High Street) starts virtually from Chestnut Cottage's front door. It leads from the foot of the western Cotswolds escarpment with a wide grass-fringed street and green lined with ancient, honey-coloured limestone buildings dating back to the 16th century.

The High Street is lined with red chestnut trees and reflects the varied architectural history of Broadway from grand Georgian buildings to ones of humbler though quaint beginnings that even reaches back in places, to the Romans.

Amenities vary from child-friendly to sophisticated, and include 2 children's outdoor play centres, golf, art and antiques galleries with prices ranging from £10-£600,000, the famed Cotswold Way for walks and hikes through animal-filled fields, horse riding, tea shops and fine dining. Broadway counts a Leading Small Hotel of the World, the Lygon Arms, amongst its ranks, complete with top ranked spa and restaurants.

Historically, Broadway was the inspiration to a number of writers and artists (Broadway Group) including Henry James, J.M.Barrie,Vaughan Williams, Elgar, John Singer Sargent, and William Morris of the Arts and Crafts movement. By the 1880's a small band of American artists headed by Francis Davis Millet discovered Broadway as a 'quaint reflection of a long ago country village'.

Henry James (1843-1916, an expatriate American writer who settled in England and eventually became a British citizen) said: "Broadway and much of the land about it are in short the perfection of the old English rural tradition."

There is Abbots Grange dating to the 14th century, the oldest domestic building in the village and one of the oldest in the country. There are Tudor Houses dating from 1660's and along with parts of the Lygon Arms Hotel and St. Eadburgha's Church which has been a place of worship for almost 1000 years.

Broadway Tower: At 1024 feet above sea level this is the second highest point in the Cotswolds. From the top of the tower is one of Englands finest viewpoints with 13 English counties to be seen on a clear day. The park affords picnics, restaurant, children's play area and adventure playground.

Broadway has several of the country's best art galleries, which can be all too tempting at times!

Walking and Cycling - Broadway is situated on the edge of the vale of Evesham which is ideal easy walking, hiking and cycling country. Explore the country lanes and visit villages such as Buckland, Laverton, Stanton, Stanway, Willersey, and Weston Subedge as well as the Cotswold Way.

Relaxing and enjoying the slower pace of life and indulging in the English passion for tea and cream cakes in the several tea shops whilst soaking up the ambience of the 16th and 17th centuries. The Cotswolds is a range of hills in west-central England stretching 25 miles across and 90 miles long. The area has been designated as an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Cheltenham hosts Gold Cup (horse racing) in March every year. Broadway hosts many horse related activities, shows and jumps on weekends throughout the year. Boxing Day is celebrated with an annual hunt which commences on the High Street.

Guestbook for Country Charm! Broadway Green

"The location could not be more perfect and the house is beautiful and old with great decorating and all the mod-cons. We will definitely return!" - Mrs. A. ,

"Thank you so much for letting us stay at your cottage this past weekend. It is a LOVELY house. It is so sweet and cozy and homey! I wish we could have stayed a whole week. It was so comfortable for our family of four--having the baby in a separate room made such a difference! Imagine our surprise and delight when we woke up on Saturday morning to the annual village summer fete on the green! It was small and quaint (put on by the local church) but my daughter was beside herself that there was a bouncy castle in her front yard!! ;-) " Mr and Mrs F, Surrey

"We had a fantastic time. It was great exploring in the nice Fall weather (60's and variable). The cottage was wonderful. We will definitely be back! Thank you also for the exhaustive lists of children's activities; our boys were thrilled with the farm and Warwick Castle." Mrs. P, Boston, MA, USA

"Our third trip. We love staying in the cottage and wouldn't stay elsewhere - it is a very comfortable place to stay and location is fantastic." Mr. P, Richmond-upon-Thames

"Thank you so much for letting us use your lovely cottage. We had such a nice time and your house is simply perfect! I absolutely love the charm, convenience and mod-cons! The town was great and the kids didn't want to come home and have repeatedly asked to move to the Cotswolds permanently." Mr and Mrs H, Dubai, UAE

"Thank you for a wonderful week and for sharing your lovely cottage with us. What a gem! We all had a really great time and enjoyed getting away." Mr and Mrs M, Texas, USA

"We had a wonderful time at your cottage! Thank you!!!! What a treasure it is. It was so nice to escape to the countryside--and after such a quick journey from London!! Amazing!" Mr and Mrs F, San Francisco, CA, USA

"Just wanted to thank you once again... we had a fabulous time and greatly appreciate your wonderful hospitality and help. It was a great trip for Christmas and just prior to the arrival of our baby. Mrs. V so appreciated getting a quality final holiday during her final "no-fly" trimester. The kids loved hitting the zoo once again and the hunt on 1 Jan was an exciting experience. Next time we are leaving the kids at home and enjoying the luxuries of Broadway on our own!" Mr and Mrs V, Twickenham
