Home description
St Cuby is located in a beautiful, much sought after clifftop location just one minute's walk to a lovely secluded beach. It is well known as the place where John Buchan wrote the famous spy novel The 39 Steps, which was made into 3 different films and now a hugely successful London and Broadway stage play. You go down THE steps straight to the beach, where, in the book, the ship Ariadne was waiting to take the spies to safety.
This FIVE STAR awarded apartment is light and airy, with French Doors opening from the fully furnished lounge onto a large well equipped balcony for al fresco dining, and of course, taking in that glorious view! With one double and one adult size bunk beds room, it is ideal for adults and families alike, with several beaches nearby (many award-winning), and plenty to do and see, including trips to the infamous Goodwin Sands, and smugglers' caves. North Foreland golf course is just a 4 minute drive away.

The South East England / Kent region
Kent, the garden of England, has much to offer, including the historic cities of Canterbury and Rochester to explore, together with fascinating Historic Chatham Dockyard. But the Thanet coastline incorporating Broadstairs is special - nearly 26 miles of it! It has a mild maritime climate, with higher temperatures than the national average. In fact in June 2008 Thanet was named as the jewel in England's coastal crown, with a record number of Blue Flag awards. Close to Broadstairs is Ramsgate, with a lovely marina and many restaurants, some with a distinctly continental feel. There is also Margate to visit, and Whitstable, famous for oysters. Further afield are Sandwich with the well known Royal St George's Golf Course, Deal and Dover. Why not take a trip to France from Dover, or Ostende from Ramsgate? In between relaxing on the balcony or beach, of course.
Broadstairs / North Foreland area
The motto on Broadstairs' town crest - "stella maris" means Star of the Sea, and it's an apt description. Broadstairs was voted one of the best coastal towns in England, second only to St Ives, by the readers of The Guardian Newspaper in 2007. Not just because of its watersports and award winning, beautiful sandy beaches, including Joss Bay for surfing, and Viking Bay with plenty of children's amusements, together with several other bays, but also because it really is very charming, with little streets, shops and fishermen's cottages all jostling happily together. Discover the Viking Coastal Trail, and the intriguing history of Broadstairs' smugglers - one of whom was presented to a young Queen Victoria! Why not go on the Smugglers' Trail and take a boat trip to discover their caves, and to the infamous Goodwin Sands which have wrecked many a fine ship? You can also see seals basking on the sands. Children will enjoy the Rock Doc walk, part of the Thanet Coast Project, and if you like birds and wildlife, you'll love nearby Pegwell Bay National Nature Reserve.
For history buffs, there is the RAF Manston History Museum, Ramsgate, which has aircraft and exhibits illustrating the history of the airfield at Manston, also the RAF Spitfire & Hurricane Memorial Trust and Battle of Britain Memorial Museum. This is a World War Two Museum displaying two complete Battle of Britain Fighter Planes, and Spitfire and Hurricane artefacts. Also there is much maritime history to discover - and St Cuby is very close to the last manned lighthouse in the UK, dating back to the 15th Century. Of course there is much history in St Cuby itself - in 1914 a german spy was captured on the clifftop nearby, and perhaps it was this that inspired John Buchan to write his famous spy novel, The 39 Steps.
You will be spoilt for choice with the number of pubs, cafes, restaurants and bistros on offer with mouth-watering menus, including the award winning Captain Digby along the clifftop only a 2 minute drive away - or you may prefer to stroll there on a balmy evening, with the sea on your right to guide you.
Charles Dickens loved and lived in Broadstairs in Bleak House, and wrote a number of his novels whilst here. You can visit the fascinating Dickens House Museum, which contains many of his letters, and also see The Old Curiosity Shop. Experience the town's pride in him during the Dickens Festival in June. August sees Folk Week, the busiest week of the year, and there are free fireworks displays and live music during summer, including jazz bands. Enjoy!
